Good luck. I wish I knew something helpful. Have a beautiful wedding and enjoy your life.
You should check http://orangecounty.weddings.com/
I live in OC but more in the Huntington Beach Area.
Good luck!!
Check out yelp.com, most restaurants, salons and such are reviewed there, especially in southern California! I'm in LA, and it's been super helpful in finding places.
I wish I could help!!! I'm in N. California, but if there's anything else that comes up that my locale may be able to help with, please let me know!! :)
Hello!! I recommend Design Visage in NP Beach/Costa Mesa for hair & Makeup, that's where I'm going, it's not as CRAZY expensive as some of the other places in the area, and they do such a great job. Plus the girls there are sooo nice, and if either you or you partner want to wear a veil or headpiece, they include a free one for rental with your hair.
As far as fun restaurants; there is a piano bar (dueling pianos) in Fullerton called the Rockin' Taco but some nights there is more of a college crowd, so I dunno if it's worth the risk. In Orange there is a neat bowling alley called Lucky Strike where we sort of wanted to do our rehearsal dinner (opted not to, long story) but they have packages for food, drinks, and bowling/pool. The food there is pretty good; mostly appetizer type of stuff, good for mingling. I don't know a lot of good karaoke bars though, sorry :(
Thank you guys so much for the responses thus far. They've definitely given me a bit of a clue!
Perfect location for your wedding! You won't be picketed out here in OC, you guys will love it here!
Hmm...a piano bar or a karaoke bar...i'm not familiar with any in NB or Laguna...the Rusty Pelican has a decent band some weekend nights but i'm not too fond of their food. Sage on the Coast has a nice view of the coastline but a little pricey. Theres also Javiers, you love the atmosphere and the outdoor patio ...all these are pretty popular spots so be sure to either come early or make reservations! Really anywhere in Newport/Laguna you need to make a reservation it gets impossible to get in sometimes esp. with a big group.
Actually like the others said...check out yelp too! Good luck and have fun!
Hellllo MissSoontoBee...
First I have to ask a quick question... did you win a photography contest with Paul Manke Photography? The reason I ask is I actually won that contest and when I met him with my fiance he told us that there was a samesex couple getting married on the same yacht we are in Newport Beach and they are planning the wedding from Arkansas! So when I read this post I definately though this could definately be them! If it's not you then don't think I'm crazy! :) Hahaha...
Now on to actually answering your questions...
For a restaurant, there are so many options down there... a fun place with a large group is "Joe's Crab Shack" which is right on the harbor (and right by the yacht if you are getting married with Electra). There are also tons of restaurants at Fashion Island, but for the most part it's some of the typical chain restaurants (Cheesecake Factory, Roys, etc.). Javiers is a GREAT place, but is pricey.
All of the piano bars I know are either in San Diego or more northern Orange Couty and Inland Empire... not any nearby Newport. One bar that's close in Newport is Sharkees but that can get a little crazy in there.
Yelp is ALWAYS a big help, definately check out there. As I think of something I'll let you know.
Good luck!

Okay clicked on your profile right now and saw your engagement pic. We do have the same photographer!! :) But two different yacht companies...
Congrats MissSoontoBee! I live in Newport Beach (on Balboa Island) and would love to help you out.
Balboa Island is ALWAYS a great place to bring out of town guests. People love the ice cream/frozen banana stores and the cute Marine Ave with its old time feel and stores. There is one bar on the island and it is so much fun! They have live music every Fri and Saturday. This past Saturday was a hilarious and fun 80's band. There are young and old people there alike, just depends on the night.
"The Pennisula" or Balboa Pennisula has lots of bars, restaurants too. There is Woody's Wharf which has karoke but I think its only during the week. I know they have a DJ there but also a cool outdoor patio (tented and heated in the "winter") where you can grab a table and drinks.
In Newport Beach, Costa Mesa or Corona Del Mar you are looking at mostly laid back beach bars/restaurants or high end eateries.
We also love these places for meeting up with friends/family: The Harp Inn in Costa Mesa (live music-sometimes Irish), Tommy Bahamas Cafe (great Happy Hour and usually live Steel Drums or guitar), Yard House (TONS of beers on tap like 50 or more) and La Cave in Costa Mesa (if you're lucky its a Phil Shane Friday).
Feel free to PM me if you need anything else!
I work in Newport Beach and I was just about to offer up pretty much the same thing as PrettyKitty, but since she lives on Balboa she knows WAY more than me, but feel free to PM with any questions :)
I will say that my favorite new restaurant in Newport Beach is The Crow Bar :)
Love the Crow Bar and so jealous you get to live in such a fabulous place PrettyKitty!
Laura! Wow, I’m so glad that you found me! Paul Manke did a freaking amazing job with our photos. If I weren’t so head over heels with Vanessa she’d be in trouble...kidding!
I’m so excited to have won the contest. It took soooo much pressure off. I even got to fire a “friend” photographer who was being a total butthead about taking our photos (she offered but then got kind of weird). It felt fantastic -now she’ll be a guest and I won’t have to kiss her butt for the rest of my natural life.
Thank you guys so much for the help. PrettyKitty, I’m going to go to the Web sites and check them out right NOW! The Irish pub in Costa Mesa actually sounds like our style. I’ll probably harass/pm you soon
I’ve been shooting in the dark. FINALLY I have a bit of direction. ThankyouThankyouThankyou!
That's awesome! What are the chances?! I actually found the contest here on WeddingBee and my fiance and I thought it was a long shot but we put some time into the application and couldn't believe it when I saw we won. When we met him he seemed totally awesome and got us completely pumped... we are actually doing our engagement session August 21 at Angel's Stadium so I will let you know how all that works out! :)
Our engagement shoot was at Newport Beach..um...beach!
It was an absolute blast. His work is awesome. He gave me a huge hug when he saw me!
I'm glad that list helped! There are a couple other good Irish bars in the area if you are interested as well. Feel free to email me at jamieland@gmail.com if you need help with anything else in the area. :)

Hey ladies!
I'm getting married in Newport Beach, Cali. in November and am planning the wedding from Arkansas. Long story...my fiance is from Rancho Cucamonga, we're a same sex couple and we didn't want our wedding picketed. Understandable right?
Anyway...
We don't know a ton about the area. I'm in desparate need of some advice including where to get my hair done the day of, where to schedule my ladies nail appointments the morning of and where would be a fun bar/restaurant to ask people to meet us the night before for a small party. We're thinking karaoke maybe? A piano bar? Nothing too insane because we want our parents to come out with us.
We've opted to stay at the Ramada Limited so I think we're kind of in the middle of everything.
Help me SoCal girls! I know you're out there!
