@birchwood29:  RB has smaller facets with a more of a glittery sparkle, the OEC has chunkier facets with more of a pastel flash of color. OEC looks more antique and appparently looks more “diamond-like”.

Here’s a great diagram. I will try to find the link to a video. I am hands down an OEC girl but I have seen some amazing rbs, too, like homeschoolingbeeof4…believe thats her name. I also included a pic of my OEC.

I am an OEC lover. Here is a picture showing the chunky faceting and flashes of light. It’s a personal preference I think though.

RB is cut to optimize sparkle, so in theory RB should always win out. however some people’s eyes are more attracted to the larger lights thrown by OEC, and will notice it more. also some RBs are cut poorly, so a nice OEC will still beat it.

in OEC there’s more variation, so you should see the stone in person before deciding (well you always should with diamonds, but RBs are easier to find in person and well-cut RBs tend to look the same). there’s also a difference between TRUE old cuts (cut in the old times by hand, with lots of imperfections) and modern old cuts, cut to mimic the facetting but done with the aid of computers to maximize sparkle.

I think what you’re looking for is a modern old cut, or even a modern transitional (something between an old cut and a round brilliant). go look at some in stores, if you can find any that stock them! otherwise join pricescope and I’m sure you’ll get plenty of help locating your perfect diamond.
