Hi! I can't help with the location bit as I'm not from the LA area but I can answer your question as to pro. make-up and hair. I had my make-up done at a Clinique counter. Doing your make-up here is a pretty cost effective way of doing it as you buy one product from them and essentially get a make over for free. But I don't think they usually do make overs on Saturdays so not sure that would work for you.
I think the pro. make-up made a world of difference because a) I don't wear make-up on a regular basis so I don't really know how to put it on and b) They put it on so that it would look good in photos. It seemed heavy to me but they promised it would look great and it did!
My mother did my hair and it turned out awesome so can't speak to getting hair done professionally.
@CMSnails: Thank you! I will be getting my makeup done by a MAC makeup artist. I am pretty good at doing my own hair so I decided to do it myself. I will be posting photos in a few weeks :)
Hi ladies, I live in the LA area as well and cant think of a place. I dont want the beach, to many people have been there done that.
we did our pictures here in la at the bradbury building downtown, the hollyhock house (gorgeous!), the orange grove as csun (really poorly cared for- do not advise) and at the santa monica pier. i've also seen gorgeous ones done at lacma, in hollywood at dusk, at griffith park.
I live in the L.A. County and when I did my engagement photos, I did not get my hair or make up done, but it's because I do not wear make up on a regular basis. (oh and by the way, I did more than 1 engagement photo shoot with different photographers)
Some places that are nice for photos could be something that is significant to you and your fiance. Like for us, we both met at school and so we included Cal State Long Beach. There is also a very nice Japanese Garden (Earl Burns Miller Japanese Gardens) that is there and so we also had photos there as well.
In Cerritos, Heritage Park is a pretty place to go to. You could also try Pasadena City Hall, San Gabriel Mission, Lacy Park in San Marino, Descanso Gardens in La Canada, Walt Disney Concert Hall (I love seeing other couple's photos here because the structure is so unique and also love the reflection the building gives in photos), Old Town Pasadena, Arboretum in Arcadia, UCLA's campus (very pretty place), Griffth Park Observatory, The Getty, Santa Monica Pier, Brand Park in Glendale, Huntington Library, all the beaches and L.A. Music Center. And even though this isn't in L.A., Downtown Disney in Anaheim is a nice place (I know a lot of places in Orange County because I lived out in that area when I went to school)
I am sorry, but I can't think of anymore at the moment. Hope this list is helpful.
(the places I did my photo shoots included: Cal State Long Beach, the Japanese Gardens at CSULB, Huntington Beach dog beach because we had our dog w/ us in our photos, Pasadena City Hall, San Gabriel Mission, Lacy Park, Monrovia Park, Central Park in Huntington Beach and Heritage Park)

Hey bees! I need help choosing a location for our engagement photos. We live in the LA area and there are so many places to choose from. Also, did anybody have professional makeup and hair done? I am not sure if I should do my own. Thanks!
