This is my very first post here (though I have been stalking everyone else’s dresses for a while!) I got engaged a couple of months ago, and it has only really sunk in now…so I am starting to think about dresses, and I wondered if anyone could help me.
I would love something in the style of this Valentino dress which I saw on Jennifer Lopez when she wore it, and I have been obsessed with it ever since. Obviously, I would be looking for something in a more bridal-like colour, but I think the style is just beautiful…
Although, like most people I have spent days browsing through dresses on the internet, I have never seen anything like this, and I wondered if any of you ladies might have seen something similar?
Or, my other option would be to find a pattern for a similar dress and have it sewn for me (or do it myself if I am feeling brave!) Has anyone ever come across a sewing pattern in this style.
Maybe I am asking the impossible, but I figured that if anyone knew, then it would be someone here!! I am going to try on dresses for the first time on Friday, so I may change my mind completely….but in the meantime, if anyone can help me on my Valentino mission then I will be eternally grateful.
Thank you so much! xxxxx

Teri Jon used to have a very similar dress amongst their collection: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Teri-Jon-NEW-Gray-Silk-Chiffon-One-Shoulder-Embellished-Toga-Formal-Dress-12-/330992498577?pt=US_CSA_WC_Dresses&hash=item4d10b0b791
The basic pattern for this dress is quite simple: a one-shouldered dress with a diagonally cut overlay similar to an asymmetrical Kaftan. I don’t know if you can find an exact pattern, but have you thought about posting a request on etsy.com? There are many talented people who may be able to make a similar dress for you based on that picture. A qualified seamstress should also have pattern-making abilities. In the UK, all dressmakers and seamstresses learn how to draft patterns.
I’ll keep looking for a suitable pattern. Have you any sewing skills?

Here is a blog for vintage Kaftan patterns that could be adapted and adjusted to fulfill your vision: http://25dollarvintage.blogspot.com/2010/07/would-you-wear-this.html

Thank you very much for replying. I can sew a little bit…though I’d probably prefer to have someone else do it for me. I never thought to look on Etsy (despite having a shop there myself!!) I’ll go and have a browse there just now…that will probably keep me up all night!
Thanks again for your reply x
