Hi there! I am new to this board and am so happy to read everyone’s helpful suggestions. I’m planning a wedding for 150 people in either March or May 2011 in the NY area (NYC, outerboroughs, LI, northern NJ, upstate – really – anywhere within an hour or two of NYC is fine) and am having trouble finding a venue that is less than $100 per person for food and alcohol. We’re cool with having the party on a Sunday and providing wine and beer ourselves to keep costs down. Ideally, I’d love to find a place that is pretty (ie nice views or nice details or nice garden) and non-wedding venue-like (we’d like something a little unique). Any suggestions? Thank you all so much for your help.

I looked for a venue in the same area as you and didn’t find anything under 125. Kittle Crabtree was $125 and going to be our venue until we decided to get married in Oregon! Where it’s waaay cheaper. I never saw anything under $100. I would pick up some of the wedding location magazines at Barnes and Nobles, they had a pretty good run down of what the basic prices are for places in the areas you mentioned. Another thing to consider is cutting people. We were going to do 120 people at $125, now we’re doing 150 people at $50, so it might help to just cut a few friends and make it more intimate.
You could try something more out of the box and do a pot luck or some kind of barbecue in a park.
