@ebounds1: I don't have a suggestion for the wedding yet, but the only other place I could think of is the conservatory at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square. THey won't let you have a wedding there, but you can take photographs. Just a suggestion! I will keep thinking hard. I live no more than 5 miles from Terrain, so I know what you're looking for.. I love that place, too!
@ebounds1: Also, it is more than 2 hours from Baltimore unfortunately, but do look at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, PA. They have a beautiful outdoor garden that does weddings, plus the greenhouses. It's absolutely beautiful.
@ebounds1: I keep thinking up new options. Have you consider the Tyler Arboretum in Media, PA or the Barn at Birchwood in Collegeville? I will keep thinking on it-- hope it's not too late!
Thanks, love108! Sorry for the delayed response...I thought I had subscribed to the post so that I would be alerted when I received one, but I guess it didn't work. It's funny that you mentioned Longwood Gardens--my mother and I visited there for an orchid show a bit after I was first engaged and I fell in love with the place. It never even crossed my mind that they wouldn't hold weddings, so I was pretty shocked when I asked and they said that they didn't! It seems that I have a bad habit of falling in love with places where I can't actually get married! My fiance and I are considering some wedding photos there, though!
I did just find out that Terrain is doing weddings again. I sent them an email two weeks ago because I was really upset that their website *still* said that they were doing weddings--and guess what?--they responded and said they were once again holding weddings there, "due to popular demand." I was completely elated and thrilled...until I read the rest of the email and had my heart broken again when I read that they had the HIGHEST venue rental fee that I have seen yet--$10,000.00! Can you believe that?! I've looked at places in the heart of DC near that White House that hold 500 people that have smaller rental fees. Terrain only holds 100 people! I'm going to see if I can negotiate that down by a lot. My fiance and I could never afford that. As it is, we're probably looking at a total wedding budget of $10-12,000.00 (and that's probably dreaming really big)!
Out of curiosity, where will you be having your wedding? I see that you're getting married in October 2013. We're aiming for spring/summer of that year. I'm a bit obsessed with plants, so I need to be surrounded by blooming things. :-)
I'll definitely take a look at the other places. I've had Tyler Arboretum on my list, but we haven't had a chance to actually research it much or visit. I haven't heard of the Barn at Birchwood, but I'll definitely check it out! Thanks so so much for your help. Definitely let me know if you think of anything else. At this point, my fiance and I are pretty upset/bitter about finding a venue that will feel like "us" that we can afford. If things don't look up soon, we may just have to elope to Thailand! Haha.
@ebounds1: 10,000 for Terrain? That is unreasonable! I would understand if it were some really large venue or really famous people got married there... but Styer's??!?! jeez. Does that include all the catering and alcohol? In which case I guess it's a litlte more reasonable....sorta , not really...I wanted to get married at Longwood when I was a little girl...then one day I was probably 13 and googled it and it said no, I was so sad ahah.
I actually only joined wedding bee a couple of days ago. Unfortunately I joined because I'm having some issues with my SO. (See "Need advice!" on the waiting board for a full description haha). I'm waiting on an engagement...and it's seeming that my SO puts things off... more than just the engagement...but I'm having to make some big life decisions soon, so I'm feeling really anxious about how this is all going to pan out. If you have any suggestions, do write them on the waiting board! Thank you!
You should also check out Ridley State Park in Delaware County. They have a beautiful ( I know you said no mansion) but most people get married just outside of it where it's all forest and beautiful. I don't think it's a very expensive venue, though.
Hey ladies - I've worked with Terrain before & it's quite gorgeous so ebounds I can understand completely your obsession. I worked with them for a photo shoot & that's when they had just announced they werent doing weddings there any more - so I'm glad to hear they're back to it. I believe the reason their rental fee is so high is b/c to hold a wedding there they are required to shut down the entire venue, which could potentialy mean revenue loss. A lot of places that are a business as well as a venue have high rental fees to assure they're not loosing money.
Some other suggestions: Hagley Museum, DE Center for Horticulture, Rockford Carriage House.
Remember that spring/summer is definitely a more expensive time of year to get married. A lot of venues will work with you on pricing if you consider getting married in the "off-season". Also most venues offer discounts for Friday or Sunday weddings.
Hope this helps ladies!
Hi all!! I hope this helps! i am also looking at terrain for our wedding also and it was $8k for the rental which INCLUDED food and decor. Anything over the $8k is $23/head ( i believe she said this was priced at 100 people for food). and we couldnt get into the space until 5pm when the cafe closes. This was a few months ago so who knows what happened since then. But i specifically asked what this fee included....Maybe re-email them asking specifics?? I am in love, love, love with this venue!! Good luck!!
hello ladies! don't know if the OP has already found a venue but i wanted to suggest Ladew Topiary Gardens in Maryland. i saw some pix from a wedding there once and it was absolutely gorgeous and unique. but i think it's a bit pricey.
I just visited there and was told that the $10,000 (!) venue fee does NOT cover any food, just the space and decor. The store and cafe will remain open until 8 and 9, respectively, so they not losing revenue by having private events and there will be random shoppers hanging around your wedding. The absolute minimum food price was $65 and up, not including tax and gratuities. If you want to personalize things, you have to hire their design consultant.
I hope that I'm getting some of this wrong, since I haven't received any details yet in the mail, but that's what I understood. It seems different from what others are saying. I wonder if they are inconsistent in what they are telling people.
Ridley Creek is no longer cheap- they jacked their prices up a lot but it seems like less so after talking to Styers. I'm not digging the pool at the Barn in Collegeville.
I am all ears for alternate, more reasonable, venues full of flowers/plants, in the greater Philadelphia area.
Have you looked at Philadelphia Horticulture Center? Gorgeous as weLl. not as intimate and quaint as Terrain but a gorgeous venue all the same. Plenty of parking, catered by Steven Starr (they have a 99pp menu; all menus exclude alcohol). Facility fee is a couple thousand but you get the entire space: both greenhouses & outside reflecting pool. I believe they have open houses relatively regularly or you can ask for a private tour from Leila. It's gorgeous but for me a little big for what I need :)
I am not familiar with the venue personally, but have you looked into Tyler Arboretum?
Or the Morris Arboretum... if I'm reading their site correctly, it would 4000 dollars TOPS if it was peak season and on a Saturday.
Your rental agreement includes:
Never heard of this place, but it looks promising! http://www.thestonebarn.com/receptions.htm
Also, Winterthur in Delaware. I am pretty sure that the rates are around 100pp, but that includes the venue rental, if I'm reading their site correctly.
Hi!
like all of you I am completely obsessed with Terrian! Everything about it! :) I was looking for the same venue you are for our wedding in June 2012. I found the Carriage House at Rockwood Park DE and fell in love with it! The venue has a very rustic feel and you can get married outside in their gardens.
Its worth a look..its gorgous!
Good luck!
I just found THIS! http://www.thestonebarn.com/receptions.htm I hope you'll let us know what you decide on!
@love108: Just a heads up, I checked out the Stone Barn for my wedding, as well. I could not have been less impressed. Not only was the manager late to our meeting and rude, rude, rude, but the facilities are really not as gorgeous as they appear in photos. The reception area could use renovating (or just a decor update...) and he wouldn't even let us LOOK at The Mill building unless we could guarantee him 150 people. Couldn't even look around inside. And my family is large enough that if I decided I loved that space, I would have filled the guest list. At the end of it all, the manager also left the meeting without saying goodbye and tore out of the parking lot without a backward glance.
Definitely check it out to see if it fits what you're going for (the prices were very reasonable), but I had high hopes that were dashed very quickly. I ended up booking the Old Mill in Rose Valley, and I am so excited. It's SO gorgeous and the caterers are extremely talented and professional. Check it out!
Hey, Don't know if you found a venue but I am getting married at the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove. There is a beautiful stone barn, outdoor pavilion, and even an apple orchard. Not sure how many people you are having because the caterer is more on the higher end of the price scale, so it may be difficult to keep it in your budget. Rental fee is $2000 I believe.

Hello Bees,
I'm a Newbee and this is my first thread. I was wondering if anyone from the PA/MD/DC/VA area could please please please help me in finding a venue that has a similar look and feel to that of Terrain in Glen Mills, PA (outside of Philadelphia). My fiance, mother, and I visited there recently to look at it as a possible wedding venue and we all fell completely and totally in love with it. My fiance and I were over the moon because we had finally (after months of research) found a venue that felt like us...that is until we heard the news. Apparently, this venue has decided to no longer allow weddings. When I heard the news (as told by a super rude lady that we later learned was fired shortly after she crushed our dreams), I cried like a baby. All of my wedding visions which had finally become reality by walking into that venue were ruined.
Now, we're back to square one. Both my SO and I are depressed about finding a wedding venue that feels so "us." It was a rarity that we even found it the first time, since we're such eclectic and picky people. We need help finding something that has a similar feel to Terrain. Please help! I've listed below why we loved everything about it:
-Outdoor space for a ceremony
-Indoor/outdoor dining area
-Greenhouse/Glasshouse
-Artistic, stylish, unique, casual and rustic atmosphere feel
-Garden/Plants were a big part of it (we're very "earthy" people)--it's a garden center and owned by my favorite stores (Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, and Free People)!
-Didn't feel like a "normal" wedding venue
Nothing else has what we want--we aren't aiming for a "standard" or "normal" wedding at a mansion, church, hotel, or banquet hall. This sort of thing makes us both feel icky.
Anyway, sorry for the super long post, but we are going crazy trying to find something that will make us feel as happy as Terrain did and we're beginning to think that it doesn't exist. We're willing to travel within 2 hours of Baltimore, in any direction!
Thanks!
