@Molly2014:  I hope someone has some suggestions for you, but I think you will really struggle to find a professional experienced photographer in that area under $2,000. If you’re ok with that then awesome, but if not you may want to consider trying to find someone who could provide half day coverage within your budget and get great photos out of it over finding someone really cheap who does a poor job on the whole day. Best of luck!

@Molly2014:  I struck a deal with my photographer for limited coverage. It saved me a bundle. I asked for an hour of coverage pre-ceremony for bride & groom and bridal party shots, full ceremony coverage, family pictures after the ceremony, and then she will be eating with us & taking a few key shots right after dinner such as speeches, first dances, and bouquet toss (not sure that I’m having one yet tho). So, that’ll be about 4hrs of coverage as opposed to her typical 7hrs or so, and I also asked for no physical pictures, just a flash drive with all the edited images.

Something to think about inquiring around about..

In LA I’d say that would buy you more like 2-3 hours with a decent photographer if they are able to take that short a job

Hate to say it, but in the LA area even $2000 is skimping on a photographer.  Full day coverage from a decent photographer with just a disc in your area is going to be more in the $3000-4000 range.

I am facing this SAME issue! I thought we could find someone for 2-3k. The few that were suggested to us were 12-15k!!!!!!!! I’m also located in Los Angeles and will be calling Kevin Lee today. He is out of our price range but I thought it’s worth seeing if he is able to work with us if we only need him for a set number of hours. We have decent photographers within our guests and there is an app you can use where all your guests pics on their phone will be shared on the app so that everyone can access them. How great can reception pics be anyway? I think the shots before the wedding and at the ceremony are the best, so if we are forced, that is where I’d want the money to go. I also think there are great photographers in Glendale however I unfortunately don’t know anyone in that area to ask for a good one who would work with our budget. I can keep you posted and if you get any great leads it would be great if you can share too!

@cupcakesESQ:  reception pics are some of my favorites to shoot and where I get the most emotion. Between reactions to speeches, first dances and great dancing, reception photos are some of the best of the day and also the very hardest to shoot! Many of my clients book me based off reception candies. It’s really where a true pro shines!

@cupcakesESQ:  I think there are a lot of us that fall into a range of 2500-5000 depending on what you’re after.  12-15K are either exceptionally amazing, or very well known.  The other thing you can consider for anyone in the LA area in general is to expand your search to include OC and San Diego.  We do a ton of weddings in LA, but live in San Diego.  There are a lot of people to choose from.

@Molly2014:  Not to be a Debbie Downer, but I think you’ll be hard pressed to find a professional photographer for 6 hours for $1000.  6 hours isn’t a full day as in it’s not 16 hours, but it’s almost a full work day, and they probably won’t be able to book another event that day.

You also have to think about what you want.  Are you going to want a CD with rights to print pictures?  (That will cost more than you think.)  If not, how many prints will you want?  Are you expecting them to shoot natural light for everything or to bring some stands?  Are you expecting the photos to be edited?  (Even the best photographers need to up the contrast or remove a glare sometimes.)

You’ll need to prioritize your wants.

@Jbbee:  Maybe that is why I’ve yet to see reception photos that I like? They usually look blurred to me and kind of sloppy? We have an open bar and my nose turns red when I drink so I figured that’s a recipe for disaster. Maybe the first hour of the reception or until the cake cutting. At this point I just have to stay focused on our budget and go from there. 4k is already 2k over the budget we had set for the photographer but we may be forced to go up to 4k if we have to. At this point I’m hoping we can find a good photographer for 3k. Wedding photos are all that are left from your special night so of course I don’t want to skimp just to meet a hard number!

@continuumphotography:  thank you! that’s great to know! I was born and raised in San Diego and in general still believe San Diego is the greatest city and always lean towards san diego vendors. Our venue is in Westlake which is even more north than the Los Angeles area so I figured that was too far. My friends in SD used LA photographers so I unfortunately have not had any SD photographer referrals. I do think have nice photos is extremely important but we don’t want too “posey” or on the other end of the spectrum too artsy and the recommendations we’ve received so far (who are almost within our price range) seem to be either/or.

@Molly2014:  thanks! that’s great to know! We originally had our budget at $1500 but then we had to double it to $3000 because I had zero luck within that price range. We are using a friend who takes professional photos for our engagement pics and I know he’s done some weddings. I would like to have him as a guest at our wedding and i’d personally prefer to have someone with more wedding experience, however, if you’d like his contact information, I can send it over! His photographer is more on the scenic and artsy side but he is very talented. I’m not sure if you are looking for traditional or more modern, but he is definitely more modern.
