I am not sure what your budget is but I love igigi.com for flattering dresses for plus-sized women. They are trendy without being "young". Here are a couple I am eyeballing now =)

i LOVED My gown -get help w size not street size-go by measurements!!!!
if in stock-you may get it in=in time
I second igigi!
Also have a look at www.onestopplus.com
The challenge of ordering online of course, is the fit. Here is a dress that would look great on most women and only requires fitting on the bodice.

If you get on it right away, you do still have time for shipping.
@Penguingal06: Hey there...We're about the same size and I too just recently purchased a dress for a military ball. I got SUPER lucky and found one at David's Bridal. They don't have the style online anymore, but it was a long black chiffon with an empire waist. On the waist, there were small ivory rossettes...I LOVE the dress and it is very figure flattering. I had a bolero made to go with the dress because I don't wear anything that is spaghetti straps.
Also, during my search, I found several promising dresses at Dillards, I just liked the one I found at DB's the best.
Good luck!
Thanks, ladies, I shall look at some of the websites when I get home form work. I will also make sure that I get measured ASAP. I am very much aware that dress sizes don't correspond to street sizes, but I wanted to give an indication of how large I was since the definition of plus sized is flexible.
I guess my other concern is simply how the dress looks on me. I found a couple of really pretty dresses on the DB website, went to try them on and they looked terrible! As in, no amount of alterations are going to make this even remotely pretty for the event. That makes me rather hesitant to order something offline. Still, I have to try it out at some point.
Bottom line, thanks! If you come up with any other ideas, stores, or websites, I would love to have to look at tonight too! :)
I've actually had great luck finding formal dresses at JCPenney. It's not the first place that comes to mind when you think of formal attire, but I've usually managed to find something appropriate in terms of age and occassion.
What about Avenue? They have more stylish options than the department stores, I think. Here are a few options. They may not carry all of these in the retail stores (some of them are Jessica London brand - they share a website), but if you confirm the general sizing in the store it may be safe to order online:

Not sure if it's too late but I've worn kiyonnia dresses to the Marine Corps ball before (and will wear another one I have if we go this year). They're pretty good, though I'd had to tailor one.
Also, Nordstrom has great dresses and you can return them very easily. I'd order a few, and return the one(s) you don't wear. You shouldn't have any problem, esp with Nordys.
I second Nodstroms. I bought a couple dresses off the website for a cruise and was able to return the ones I didn't like to the store.

I am a plus sized woman (street 18/20) who is incredibly depressed right now. The Navy ball is inless than 2 weeks and I stillhaven't found an appropriate dress! Due to the time crunch I can't exactly special order a dress which means I am stuck finding something off the rack.
The problem with off the rack shopping for a plus size woman can be broken down into 2 parts. 1. The dresses available (think DB bridesmaid dresses) tend to look pretty boxy and unflattering on larger women. I know that some of the strapless dresses look nice, but for a military ball short and strapless are two things to avoid at all possible costs. The remaining dresses are just not flattering. 2. The dresses at other stores (dillards, etc) tend to be either exceedngly matronly or incredibly young looking. I am not a 16 year old girl wanting bubblegum pink princess for prom nor am I a 60 year old MOB!!!!
What's a bee to do !? I need a gorgeous, yet relatively modest dress for the ball. I have tried consignment stores, DB, Dillards. To make matters worse, I live in a shopping wasteland where there are no Macys, Nordstroms, Lord and Taylors, etc. HELP!!!!!
