We're less than two months out from our wedding and have finally come to the realization that we need some dance lessons stat!  ...if we don't want to look like fools during our first dance.  We took a free trial lesson and we were told that we could either foxtrot or swing to our first dance song.  Apparently foxtrot is easier?  ...but to me it seems a little more stuffy and less fun than swing.  So here are my questions:

If you're already married, what dance step did you use for your first dance?

...and if you're a dancer, what do you think would look better for a first dance?  Foxtrot or swing?

We did swing for ours.  I have two left feet, and we had only one lesson (and lots of practice on our own afterward).  However, your friends are not going to be dance critics, and a long wedding dress will cover up a lot of footwork errors.  So if you like swing, go for it.

Swing is deffinetly more fun and will probably be easier to learn because the footwork is basically the same step done in different ways...however the foxtrot is (in my opinion) awesome and a lot of fun to watch because it can be sooo romantic.

    My dancer opinion....go with swing.

We did the foxtrot, definitely much easier. You don't have to make it as stiff as the ballroom dancers do since you're not in a competiton. You can take it easy and enjoy yourself and still look elegant.

I love love love swing dancing ! But it can be kind of complicated ... especially if you've never danced before.

I'd say learn swing but ask the instructor to just teach you a few basic steps/swings/spins that you can learn really well and then mix it up on your own on the day of - it'll be more fun and natural, even if it's not a perfectly polished choreographed dance.

Hey!  My BF and I are competitive ballroom dancers and we're also training in Harlem-style Lindy Hop and Social-Style West Coast Swing. We've taught dance lessons to several couples for their weddings.

    My advice:

1: do something you like.  honestly, no one is going to critique you on your wedding dance...in fact most of the people there will be impressed that you can "really dance" (not just do the "hang and drag", lol)

    2. if you pick foxtrot: make sure you have enough room! This is a traveling dance that is usually better if you have a slightly larger floor (i.e. not a teeny tiny dance floor)....it stinks if couples are doing the foxtrot, forget to do a corner move, and end up off the floor ;)

    3. If you do swing: this dance stays in place (generally) and can be done on a smaller floor.  Swing however does take a little more energy, so if your dress weighs 100 lbs, you'll probably be sweating pretty good by the end!

    4. coreographed dances are nice, but in my experience, they aren't the best for first time dancers at the wedding....I mean if you forget a move, you're frozen in place with nothing to do....IMO its better to learn several (5-6) moves that you are comfortable with (and your FI is good at leading) and then string them together to the music.

    5. personally, I think swing is easier to learn, but Foxtrot looks better in the wedding dress....that's just my 2 cents though!!  We've taught both, and both have turned out great!  Just remember to have fun!

YouTube has a lot of great dances as well, if you don't want to spend the money on dance lessons. My friend got married and did "Itty Bitty Pretty Thing" as their song and learned all the moves off a video from there. It was so nice!
