My oral surgeon said all 4 of my wisdom teeth are impacted and I need to get them out ASAP the soonest appointment was Feb 12th... I don't want to go anywhere else because this place is doing it for free. Will I be ok with myFeb 28th wedding shower and March 13th wedding?? Total obvious down side is that it will take away from planning time and it's right before Valentines day :(, but on the up side my wisdom teeth have been pushing my back teeth, that used to be straight, in all kinds of weird directions and I don't want that to happen to my front teeth! and.. maybe i'll lose weight! haha! Have you had yours out? Were they impacted? How long did it take you to recover??

I had 2 impacted and the other two were starting to push out. The impacted ones took a day or so longer to heal, but I had the surgery on Friday and was fine by the next Tuesday.

All my brothers (3) have had theirs out...and i watched the whole process...one of them had all 4 impacted also...his swelling was gone after a week. You should be fine. just make sure that you do EVERYTHING they tell you to. and ice, ice and more ice for your face!

All of my swelling was gone within a week, but my little sister just had hers out, and her swelling only lasted two days!   Everyone is a little different, but you'll probably be fine two weeks after at your bridal shower.

As long as you watch out for dry socket, and follow the follow up, you should be fine.  If you're a quick healer, I would figure you'd be alright.

I've had friends that have had pretty bad swelling, but it was gone within a few days.  Lucky me, the only way people knew I was gumming my meals was because I told them.  I think all four of mine were impacted, and I had another four taken out for braces.

You can't wait until right after the wedding? I had all 4 of mine out last year and was fine within a few days. My face was slighty puffy for a week, but honestly after 7 days it was gone.

You'll be fine! I had 4 impacted, was knocked out for the surgery and everything went A-OK. Just listen and follow all the doctor's recommendations for eating so you dont get dry sockets. Sleep as much as you can in the beginning and your body will start the healing process. I survived on jello, ice cream, and applesauce!! Oh- and dont drink from a straw!!

I'm paranoid it will make my front teeth crooked like it's done to a couple of my back teeth so I just want them out asap! So far the average sounds like just a few days to a week! That would be perfect thanks ladies!

I had three impacted. I swear to you, my cheeks didn't swell AT ALL. it was crazy. I can't swallow pills, so I didn't even take the vicodin they gave me! I took liquid tylonol and that was it.

You'll be in pain for a few days, but if you listen to their instructions, and eat VERY carefully (and clean your mouth like a maniac when they say you can), it will be fine. Best of luck! As for missing planning time..I didn't sleep that much. I actually spent a LOT of time on WB that week!

You'll  be fine! I had all 4 of my impacted wisdom teeth out. I went into the hospital and they put me out and took them all out at once. They gave me the choice of having 2 out at a time in the chair or having them all out at once - I chose all out at once cos I didn't want to know anything about it! LOL

I came home at about 4pm and slept until about 11am the next day and apart from my new "gaps" being a bit tender I was fine. I didn't have any swelling or bruising and I soon got over eating custard and stuff and was eating normal food. The biggest thing I had to remember was to wash out my gaps after eating - ICK I know! You'll be fine!

i hate to scare you, but my experience has been different. it may be because i got mine out at 28, which the dentist said is unusual. i had swelling for about 8 days and the healing process has been very difficult. 2 weeks later, im still not eating solid food. not to mention the holes that are there when the stitches dissolve. food gets stuck in the wholes and the dentist gives you a tool to flush them. i was told the holes can take up to 2 months to completely heal.  if you get it done before the wedding, try only to have smoothies that day.  you dont want to excuse yourself during dinner to flush the chicken out of the whole.  i flused mashed potatoes last night...it was disgusting.

That's so good to know I can survive w/o pain pills.. I'm not much of a pill person either. WB recovery sounds fun!

I had them out and they were impacted as well.  My best advice is to CLEAN - CLEAN- CLEAN!  Make sure you are cleaning with the spritz thing and don't rush with eating cause it will just be more things that can get caught.

Oh, but ask your doctor is too much cleaning can be a bad thing ebfore you do it.  I was okay but I never asked and I should have.

    It's not bad though!

You will want to take something. And have someone wake you up the first night so you can take more. I woke up the next morning after the surgery in a lot of pain because my last dose of medicine was taken the evening before.

well i've had 28 teeth pulled, so i like to consider myself queen of teeth pulling. for my wisdom teeth, i was out for a week. literally, couldn't get off the couch. and then they got infected. worst pain ever. obviously i'm the minority, most people said they're fine after a few days. and even if this happens to you, you should be fine by wedding day.

All 4 of my wisdom teeth were impacted, and I got them out on the same day (the day before Thanksgiving).  It was a little painful after, so I took some vicodin, but my cheeks didn't swell AT ALL, and I was able to eat most of my Thanksgiving dinner the next day (I cut everything into verrrry small pieces).  Definitely do EVERYTHING they say about cleaning and how to keep the swelling down.  I did and didn't have problems with anything.  Within 5 days, I was back to eating completely normal.

I was 22 I think when I had mine out.  I had them out on a Friday and was back at work by Monday.  I agree, do everything they tell you.  You will be more than fine by the shower.

I was about 28 when I had all four of my impacted wisdom teeth removed, and I made sure to do exactly what they said for cleaning and swelling. I was fine with 600mg of ibuprofen for the first 3 or 4 days (and in fact, the next day I was up and doing some minor demo in my basement!). Then dry socket set in. OUCH!!!!!! I should've known something was wrong when I had to take a vicodin on day 4 and 5... but on day 6 I woke up in as much pain as I had been in the night before. I was NOT a happy camper to say the least. :( But the treatment was such a Godsend! They put medicated gauze packing in, and the pain goes away almost immediately and stays gone. Ahhhhh.... such sweet relief!!!

Moral of the story? Clean your "gaps" thoroughly, but BE GENTLE! I learned too late that being vigorous with the water can cause the clot to dislodge, exposing the nerve to everything, including the air you breathe. :( (Basically, you should feel better every day. If you start to feel worse, call your oral surgeon).

Even with my dry socket, though, I would have been ready to get married in a month, so I wouldn't worry about it. You'll probably still have the gaps when you get married, but they'll probably be healed and therefore shallow enough that all you have to do is swish some water or mouthwash around and spit to clean them.

Honestly I think that you only need about a week to heal so I wouldn't be worried about it at all.

And I agree with hope.  Make sure that you clean out your incisions but be very careful about doing it too vigorously and don't use straws for at least 2 weeks.

I have class with a girl that had all 4 impacted and they had to break her jawbone to get them out. Are they doing this to you? She has gone thru 4 bottles of meds and is in extreme pain..swollen etc.. been out weeks.

I know i could be over reacting but id take ALL precautions. I had mine done and it was EASY no pain, no meds, not swollen at all, but they weren't impacted.

You should be fine. I didn't swell up at all... and I felt awesome afterwards. Even though all I took was Tylenol (I'm allergic to aspirin and ibuprofen). I went to a movie the same day!

Make sure you follow the directions so you don't get dry socket! And use a lot of salt water in your mouth :)

Ok my FI just had 4 teeth pulled 2 wks ago. He has a HUGE pain tolerence but this has totally KO'ed him. He still cant eat real fool and is in pain even now. It took a week for the swelling to go down. He tried to eat food out this weekend and was in such pain that we had to leave with food in boxes. I literally has to cut him food up into little tiny bits sizes. I'd hate for you to fall into this cat. and not be able to eat or enjoy your wedding.

I had the same issue...all 4 were impacted and pushing my teeth to create movement.  I actually did invisalign which helped straighten my teeth and still wear my retainer at night.  But beware, Do not drink with a straw!  I formed dry sockets and was in incredible pain for almost a week.  But you'll be great for your wedding!

I'm going to follow all of your advice and hopefully have a quick recovery! Thanks so much :)

I had all three of my wisom teeth taken out at once. I didnt really have much swelling at all. No one was ever able to tell except the day of. The only thing that did happen though was one of my teeth was impacted and very close to the nerve. When that tooth was removed the oral surgeon hit a nerve and my whole jaw was numb for over a month. It was really horrible, for the first two weeks i couldnt really smile. I think that its really rare though, you should be fine.

Make sure you clean your gums really well!!  My brother had impacted wisdom teeth, and one of them ended up getting dry socket.  That is no fun.  They'll give you a weird shaped plastic syringe, make sure to use it as they advise.  My mom decided spring break was the perfect time to do my wisdom teeth, and I was fine in four days.  I think you'll be ok, don't stress too much.

I only had one wisdom tooth (so I only needed one pulled!) and it wasn't a big deal... but if I needed four removed, I would absolutely wait until after the wedding. I'd hate to have any risk of complications or slow healing!

Just wanted to add my experience, too...

I had my wisdom teeth removed when I was 17.  I had three "cut out" and one pulled (the one was always poking through my gums a tad bit).  While I was careful to follow all aftercare instructions, I was able to avoid any infection but I have heard horror stories about dry sockets.  I ended up having a sensitivity to the percocet I was prescribed (it gave me an incredible migraine) so I toughed it out pain-med free after Day 1.  It's totally do-able!  All swelling was gone within 10 days, but I must say, I did have some bruising on my cheeks that lingered for a little longer.

I think you'll be just fine with at least a month before your wedding date.  Unless some major infection sets in or you develop a dry socket, I doubt you'll run into any trouble.

I did all 4 of mine at age 20.  I was pretty careful but one got infected.  It was gross, but cleared up pretty quickly with antibiotics.  4 weeks seems like a pretty safe amount of time even with the worst case scenario.

My advice, and this is based on my experience which was in October of 09, is for you to wait!

Let me tell you why, I didn't fully recover from all 4 wisdom teeth until after Christmas.  Now I know that it varies, but one was very close to a nerve.  So what happened with me was that I had lots of numbness around my chin and bottoms of my gums.  It felt really weird.  Thankfully it went away since there is the risk of numbeness being permanent in some cases.  The swelling took significantly long to go all the way down, I would say 3 weeks total for me to look back to normal, by the end of the first week there is some swelling, but it gradually goes down.

My wedding is also in March, and I honestly would put it off I were you just because I figure it being that close, you don't want to risk it.  All 4 of mine were also taken out, all very impacted, so it means more recovery time.  Just my advice.  Let me know if you have any questions, sorry if I scared you, but I had a pretty bad experience, I'm glad it's over with and the surgery was good, but the pain afterwards is pretty bad once the anesthesia wears off.

Thanks Verosara I'll talk to my oral surgeon and see if it's ok to make it after the wedding. He was very adament about getting me into the next appointment possible so if it's really serious I'll just stick with my appointment and pray for the best, if not I'll definitely move it! Having a numb lower lip just makes me think of drooling and that's NOT what I want at my wedding! haha

@bella13, you're totally right, the numb lip, not so pretty when I couldn't even put lip liner on correctly, it was sad.  Have your oral surgeon check your x-rays again to see if any are close to any nerves.  Good luck!

I hate to scare you also, but when I had this done over ten years ago I got dry sockets and was in unbearable pain for 3 weeks. Worst experience of my life. Had two major invasive surgeries later in life and the pain from those didn't even compare to the dental pain. However I'm one of the unlucky minority and hopefully yours will be smooth sailing. As for me, I don't schedule dental work before anything important anymore, including vacations.

I've never even heard of dry sockets! Just do what your dr tells you to do and you'll be fine. A month is a long time. I'm sure you'll have a BIG happy smile for your wedding AND your shower!

I had my wisdom teeth out and the swelling went down within three days... Oct 28th I had it. Unfortunately for me.. I bit my tongue during surgery and sliced it.... that I cut off nerve feeling... and I still have tingling on the left side of my tongue and its now Jan 26th.

Thats the worst case, if I didnt slice my tongue I would have been a happy camper.

There are always risks or possible complications with any type of surgical procedure. Impacted 3rd molar removal is no exception. While the majority of them go off without a problem, the positioning of the teeth and their close proximity to the second molars (as well as the skill of the surgeon) will give an him a pretty good idea of how difficult it may be for the patient post-op. However, many patients do not follow the instructions carefully and issues may arise.

I'm not sure why he's insisting they be done ASAP...are you in any kind of pain or are any of them infected? If you aren't, waiting a month isn't gong to do much as the teeth don't move that fast, especially if impacted..they have nowhere to go! Yes they can put pressure on the adjacent teeth, but not enough to cause movement in such a short time.

I think because you have so many important events on the horizon, it would be better for you to do it after the wedding. Recovery time, pain threshold and everything else will vary from person to person, but knowing what I know about Dentistry,it isn't something I would suggest my own daughters do before their weddings.( Both of mine had all impacted wisdom teeth removed at once and were fine.)

Good luck with whatever you decide!
