Currently, my hair is blonde, and I really want to have it dyed purple when I go to the salon for my appointment tomorrow. Now I know there is no such thing as permanent purple hair dye, and I already know all about ways to make semi and demi permanent unnatural or neon hair dyes last: use cold water when washing, shampoo as little as possible, use color protecting products, etc.
So here’s my dilemma: I am willing to have my hair re colored every 4 weeks, but not more frequently than that. Will purple hair dye last a month between colorings? I am fine with the color getting lighter or fading to a still somewhat attractive color by month’s end, but I am not going to pay for it if the purple color will wash out completely after 1-2 weeks. If I do everything I can to maintain the color, can I make it one month between salon visits?

@TattedNYBride: it will probably last a month. i have blonde hair and it soaks up color. i used to dye it unnatural colors and it took forever for the color to fade out. now i dye it a dark reddish brown every fall with the over the counter non-permanent color and it still takes months for it to fade out. it definitely still looks good 1 month after applying the color.
your best bet is to try it once and see how long it lasts.

@calibee79: I know you’re right. I’m just stubborn and don’t want to waste the money and end up with grungy, orangey faded color in a week ;P lol
I do hope that 4 weeks is doable though, and your story gives me hope!

@TattedNYBride: I had purple hair, it was about 10 years ago so dye may have gotten better. My hair is brown and had to be blached to a yellow/straw blonde before colouring.
For me, the BRIGHT purple lasted about 10days/2 weeks before it really started to fade, I had to touch up every 4 to 6 weeks (by 6 weeks it was pretty faded). I washed my hair every other day and used a purple tinted shampoo (made for grey hair) the colour depositing shampoos didn’t exist then. I didn’t usually use cold water. My hair generally takes and holds colour pretty well. When mine faded, it usually faded to a lilacy colour, it never went green or orange (when it was blue…that’s a whole other story).

@MsGinkgo: thank you! Yes, I won’t mind the fading so much if it changes into a pretty color 🙂 good to know about the other colors though.

One of my favvorite parts of unnatural colors is seeing the fade, and I think you’ll still have some purple after 4 weeks. So go for it!!!

@JenGirl: I just hope if it’s going to fade, it does it nicely? I really want purple, I’m just talking myself into giving it a shot. I will most likely go for it 🙂

I would say that any longer than four weeks is pushing it. Purple die (of any sort, hair, frosting, fabrics, etc) is a difficult color to deal with. I knew a girl who had to come into the salon I worked at religously because she had like three different definate colors in her hair. Good luck, and you have to post a pic! 🙂

@MissMudge: just out of curiosity, would say there are any other “different” or more unnatural shades or colors that hold up better?

@TattedNYBride: lol yeah i understand! i did purple in high school but it wasn’t a neon purple. it faded into a natural looking red color. i don’t think you’ll fade into orange (at least i would hope not!). i’ve done fuschia and loved it. i thnk my least favorite color is green. i never did it because i hate how it looks when it fades out.

You can actually get a permanent violet hair dye from esalon.com. I like their products and the variety. You won’t get neon purple, but it will be a very “unnatural” color. They also have a fire engine red.

It’s been a while since i did purple, and primarily I did purple as streaks. However, I definitely got pink to last 4 weeks. It depends on how you treat your hair, how pourous your hair is (I have brown hair and bleached it, so the dye soaked right in), and if you use good dye. If you take care of your dyed hair (don’t wash it often if you can help, and use shampoo for color treated hair), I think you can get it to last four weeks. When I did pink, I easily got two weeks of the hair bright, and then it faded out. I read somewhere to add a bit of the dye to the shampoo and conditioner – I’m honestly not sure if it does anything, but i did it anyway.

My sister has natural blonde hair, and when I put pink dye in it, it only lasted a few weeks. Hair dye “sticks” better to damaged hair, so even if your hair is light, you may want to bleach it a little bit so it’s more porous and the dye can seep in.
Tips for making it last longer: only wash your hair with cold water, only wash your hair a couple of times a week, and put some of the purple dye in your conditioner to brighten it up when you wash.
I think purple will fade really nicely! Much better than blue, which starts looking kind of green as it fades.

4 weeks should be fine. I used to dye purple (and many many other colors haha) and usually got 6-8 weeks between dyes just using Special Effects in my bathroom. But it does fade a little after week 3-4, and this also comes from someone who only washes their hair maybe 3 times a week. Purple usually fades nicely too, so a tiiiiny bit of extra time between dyes once it starts to fade is no biggie.
