So I thought I had my heart set on having our wedding March 2009 on Isla Mujeres, a small island north of Canucn, but now I’m second guessing it and wondering if Playa del Carmen might be better. I want an intimate wedding and getting married on a large resort-like venue is not me and my Fiance’s style really. Isla Mujeres is more "rustic" and not as overrun with resorts like Cancun area, but now I’m worried if guests will have enough to do on the island. What are your thoughts? Isla or Playa del Carmen? Thank you so much!

My parents went to Isla Mujeres for their 10th anniversary and to this day, everytime they talk about it, their eyes glaze over, they get these silly grins on their faces and insist on showing me their pictures again. They had the time of their lives and dream of going back. They said it was perfect for a couple madly in love. None of the party atmosphere like Cancun (it’s where all the spring breakers and kids on summer vacation go), but not too far from action if you desired it. I have no doubt that I will go there someday just based on their recommendations.

we went to playa del carmen for spring break in college (if that gives you any idea). granted, we never ran out of things to do, but i wouldn’t want to have my wedding there. it’s a little too touristy and jam-packed with people.

I definitely vote for Isla Mujeres. I went to Cancun a couple of years ago and Isla Mujeres is only a short boat ride away. It would be easy for your guests and families to stay at a resort in Cancun and boat into the next island for the ceremony. Or stay at Isla and boat into Cancun for some action the next night. What I’m saying is they’re close enough to do both, but Isla would be my preference for the ceremony because it’s more secluded and absolutely beautiful!

I also think Isla Mujeres would be great. I’ve never been to Playa del Carmen, but we went to Isla Mujeres on a Spanish trip in high school and the thing I loved most about it was how non-touristy it was. We found at least one night club there (granted, this was 10 years ago). Another nice thing about Isla Mujeres is that it is so small, you can see the entire island by foot or golf cart, so your guests won’t have to worry too much about transportation to anywhere they would want to go.

I would go with Isla Mujeres, especially since March is a heavy spring break month. Cancun would be overrun with crazy college kids.
Good luck with your decision!

We stayed on Isla Mujeres last year for the first time and loved it. Sounds like you’re having a small wedding, and it’s actually very cool to be on vacation with all of your closest friends. Even if you’re not all staying at the same hotel, Isla is intimate enough where you’ll run into people as you’re out and about.
There’s plenty to do on Isla, and people can always ferry over to Cancun if they want more excitement. Don’t forget that they will all be coming to be there for your big day, being on vacation in a beautiful setting is just a bonus.
I highly recommend Casa de los Suenos resort. It’s a little off the beaten path, but just a $5 cab ride into the main area. It only has 8 rooms, but has all the amenities of a big hotel like a restaurant, spa, full housekeeping, etc.
You feel like you’re staying at your rich friend’s house, their service is impeccable. Their open-air restaurant is very classy and the perfect place to host a rehearsal dinner/post-wedding lunch for your guests.
Have a blast!
