I normally hate poofy, "pageant-y" type dresses, but I tried this on while shopping for a BM dress for a friend's wedding and I LOVED it on. I'm a size 18 and my other friend is a size 6 and it looked amazing on both of us. I'm sad she didn't let us get it :(
Thanks @GeekChic
That one is an improvement over the picture I shared. Ugh if only it was at least a short length dress. I am so hating this style. Sorry I'm venting too much. It's just soo not me.
But yes, the one you suggested is a huge step fwd in the right direction. Thank you again!I'm going to go check it out this weekend.
Anyone else with other visual ideas? I'm all open for business here. hehe
I feel your pain...I've had to wear BM dresses I hated...haha...so vent away. I found a few more that might be slightly better. I can't sleep tonight so I am happy to help!
I tried this on, too, I think. It's nice and it comes in chiffon:
Oh ne-ne! That origional dress has got to go, so I wish you the best of luck in your search.
Thanks..the Dessy one and Alfred Angelo one is promising.
Ok now the more I look at all these dresses, I feel like they are all PROM dresses haha
Man I hate satin lol grr
Hahaha, my best friend hates satin too but I looove it. So I will go with organza otherwise I'll never hear the end of it from my futer MOH. Your post has showed me the error of my sating BM dress ways.
haha @MrsGolden2Bee
Yes - I veto on SATIN lol
I don't hate Satin completely but to have an ALL SATIN dress...*shakes head no* It's so 1980s prom to me.
I gave my friend/bride all these cute dresses in hopes of her being "inspired" and seeing how she can make her wedding unique and modern. But alas, she's set on this. She's set on Satin not only for us bridesmaid, but also for her own gown. And I was hoping, that all the bridesmaid would speak up and say NAY to it. But to my surprise, they all LOVE IT. And they take it a step forward and even suggest dresses like this one:
Um...that's totally in the PROM section! ugh!! WHY ME?! I feel awful that I am not on the same page with everyone else. I feel like - maybe I'm the one with the bad taste. But then I look at everything they suggested and I still am in shock that they are excited to wear such a thing.
If it was up to me, I'd totally get something like this:
or
Oh did I mention, she has no venue or date yet!?! She just got engaged and already we're shopping for dresses. All the bridesmaids and the bride are going shopping this Sat. We have like 14 more months until she even marries! I don't understand why we are even looking yet. lol
Holy crap...the DB one the other bridesmaids suggested? Baddd. It looks like a mermaid!!!
And 14 months out for a dress is weird (peoples' sizes can change a lot in a year +), especially if she doesn't have the venue or date...those kind of set the tone for what kind of dress. Does she expect you to order them or just look?
According to the bride, they are on the hunt for a "good deal".
So they will look this weekend, but a few of them seem to be set on a few dresses already since they think it's a "deal" and don't want to lose out on the deal.
I'm all about saving $ but, I don't mind waiting to try and lose weight and also spend a little more for the right dress. She says technically we can spend how ever we want, but she also says...
Well, if my BM finds the dress they like this weekend, you all have to find the same shade of red, same fabric, and of course same style aka "oscar/glam" or in my AKA world "80s Prom goes Miss Universe"
So I feel even though I have the option to get a different fit - A-LINE, MERMAID, ETC.
I still feel I'm limited in choices. I don't mind the color, but it's this whole satin/oscar vibe I'm not feeling. It's very limiting in terms of choices no matter how much I'm willing to spend.
I have a strong hunch they will all find a dress they love this Saturday. Through our emails it seems they are set on it. They love a good "deal". UGH!!
BTW...Just having you all agree with me that those dress selections are not that "cute" makes me feel more SANE. I really really want to be the supportive bridesmaid/friend who is going to be there for her bride/friend from beginning to end. I have every good intention of this. But I'm so HATING this dress situation. I feel like I'm going to look ridiculous and tacky and cheap. And I try in so many ways to politely tell her or give her new ideas, but she won't budge. This is it. I don't understand how I'm the only one out of 9 girls who thinks this dress route is going to be insanely tacky and old fashioned.
Haha, well are you the only one wearing a different dress? I love all the choices they've shown, and although I don't hate the one the bride wants, I totally sympathize. But are any of the other BMs wearing something other than that?
Also I bought my dress april of last year.. haha and my wedding is this coming april. But to my bridesmaids I said "black and knee-length. Have fun!" And I know none of them have really gone looking yet :P We will probably do a day trip out after the holidays are over and find them. But being a bride myself, I know I got really excited about all the wedding planning, and we had to push the date back another year due to work/deployments/money/etc so it's been a while in the making! Haha
@Chaeinlove
Thanks! I know...i'm trying not to be difficult or a brat. This is my only place to vent actually. I can't vent to the other BMs or the bride. I am trying to be as supportive as I can. I'm just cringing inside that's all. lol
@SarinaLove: I LOVE the second Ann Taylor dress you posted!! AND its in navy which is one of my wedding colors!! Thanks!!
UGH, not a satin fan either so I feel you! Chiffon is awesome and flowy! I love Dupioni Silk too!
Satin Charmeuse might be a better option, I think it flows better than plain satin, and you get the same shiny look!!
Damn, that's going to be a lot of red, shiny satin. Is anyone going to be paying attention to the bride?? I'll throw a few into the ring though:

YOU ALL ROCKED! Wedding Bees did not let me down. Thank you so much for your suggestions. I saw a few decent ones that I can see myself actually wearing without making me feel like it's overdone.
Ok hate hate HATE that blue mermaid DB dress. LOOOOVe the first ANN Taylor, that's actually more the way I'm thinking of going. *Hi5* for kick a$$ taste!
I also really like that first one @shavri posted. Sooo pretty, but I could NEVER wear it, it would look waaaaay horrible on my bod :( super pretty though.
I kinda am digging the 2nd on @Shavri posted. Just not sure if it's full on satin enough for my friend lol I'll have to check on that.
But thanks for the hi5! It makes me feel good knowing I'm not delirious. That blue mermaid dress is tacky as heck! lol
So, everyone loves the satin idea--before trying anything on? I hope (for your sake) that all the lumps and bumps that satin tends to accentuate are totally visable and that this weekend is enlightening and everyone changes their mind. Satin=yuk.
@luvdmb36 - AMEN!!!!
Let's hope!! But dude all the girls are skinny as heck so with my luck, they will all look hot regardless of what they wear. But let's hope for my sake, someone else speaks up and hates it too. So far, I'm the only one that has voiced any concerns. So I'm totally outnumbered!
There are a bunch of different dress styles in satin here: http://www.ariadress.com/DressThumbnails.htm.
The prices are reasonable and this might allow you to use the same fabric but to get a dress that fits your body well...the styles are pretty simple (and even though there are some wonky belts in the pictures, you could prob dress up or down each gown nicely).
Someone else suggested this one, but I have to agree with her. I wore it in my MOH's wedding in '08 and it's really comfortable. Kind of hot though, so hope her wedding isn't in a summer month! haha. Other than that, my only advice to you is to be supportive and let her have her way {unless she goes too far over the top}
good luck!
Has your friend given any thought to the idea of just how many different types of reds there are out there? And red is not like other colors where different shades look good together. different shades of red look terrible together, (found out back in my sorority days). if she's letting everyone pick completely different red dresses she's going to have problems.
My eldest sister and I wore this dress to our middle sister's wedding.. My eldest sister is 5'4 and was 220 lb at the time. I thought she looked gorgeous, it accentuated all the right areas and didn't make her look like she was wearing a giant red tent.
I'm going to be the one to disagree here. I'm not a fan of satin either (my bridesmaids are in chiffon) but I don't think the dresses posted are 80's prom or pageant. I think, at least from what you posted and suggested, that you're tending to think long dresses look prom, the ones you suggested were short. But I haven't minded any of the dresses posted (except the blue one, not of a fan of that). Here are some more suggestions though:

Ok I have to say, ew! that dress is really uggo! I am not sure what your pricerange is... but I have been eyeing this dress for quite some time now and it would totally fit your theme! Its BCBG and you could totally wear it again!

Thanks for all the suggestions!
Don't worry. I'm being supportive and of course letting her get her way. It is her wedding, of course. :) I would never want to be disruptive to her ideas. I'm just trying to find a workaround it if I can. lol
But thank you again for all the suggestions! I don't know if she knew about the different reds. I think she wants APPLE red. So I'll figure out what that is and make the most out of it. I'm sure it'll all work out fine.
I am actually selling a flame red bridesmaid dress from the dessy/ After six collection

Hey Everyone!
I'm a bridesmaid and my friend wants all her 8 bridesmaid to wear Red, Satin, Oscar/glam dresses.
Here is a sample of style she wants: http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Structured-Satin-Dress-with-Chiffon-Ruffle-F14108_Sale-Sale-Bridesmaid-Dresses
I'm sorry but I really really really dislike this dress. :( Yet, all the other BMs LOVE it and love other similar styles that I personally find tacky or too "pageant" like.
Now, every bridesmaid is allowed to wear her own type of dress just as long as it's red, long, satin, and is formal enough and glam enough for the Oscars. This is her exact words. So at least there is some leeway. And I understand this isn't MY wedding. But I work in the wedding industry and I tried to give my opinions but let's just say I'm outnumbered. Everyone is on the same page and everyone loves these type of dresses except me. Ugh! I hate being the difficult one.
Anyways, I'm coming to you all to ask for your help. Can anyone out there help me find a dress that's Red, Satin, Long, and Oscar/glam but not mermaid, trashy, pageant-like, or only looks good on skinny people. I'm short and chubby. Satin just looks so damn heavy and old-fashioned but that's just my opinion. I much prefer chiffon, lace, or anything flowy, light, and feminine.
Anyone have any suggestions or visual examples to help me. THANKS A BUNCH!
