It might not have been glass.
Try searching for acrylic cake stands:
I found this:
here:
http://www.catherines-cakes.co.uk/html/cakestandhire.html
Unfortunately it's a UK based site, but there must be some available online.
This site can custom make acrylic stands:
You might try asking a local florist. Even if they don't have one they probably know where to get one. They order tons and tons of glassware for their arrangements so they should be able to hook you up with a good vender... or several.
So do you want it to be flush? As in 16x16?
I'm actually one of the Boston brides who is renting RosyChicklet's beautiful cake stand!
I don't think this is exactly what you are describing, but have you seen the pics of Mrs. Penguin's cake stand? It was beautiful, and you could replace the flowers that she used with battery-powered or LED lights- here's the link (scroll down towards the end of the pics)

good luck!

Hi all, I'm a long time lurker, first time poster but I'm really in need of some help. I went to my first bridal show last week and I saw a very cool way to display a wedding cake. Basically the cake was sitting on a LARGE (probably 18"L x 18"W x 3"H) clear glass vase/base with another thin piece of glass that went on top of the vase and the cake sat on the thin top piece. Inside the vase they had fresh flowers and small little (battery powered?) lights. It was so pretty and it had a modern look to it which is exactly what I wanted. It looked like a simple enough idea to recreate (or so I thought...) but I cannot find a vase/base like this ANYWHERE. I've spent hours online looking for it but the largest "low profile" square vase I can find is on 12"L x 12"W x 3"H. That will never work bc the bottom tier of my cake is 16"!! I know I'm probably rambling here (all the searching has made me delirious) but if anyone knows of a place I can find this or can provide ANY help (maybe this idea/look has a name that I don't know ?) I would so greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
