love the outfit, but i am a fan of wearing a suit to an interview. do you by chance have a pair of dark trousers and a dark suit jacket?
I think that's too casual for an interview in the field you discribed, (and most professional fields). I would definitely wear a suit or a blazer with pants or skirt, (separates). I've always been told that for interviews you need to step up your outfit a notch from what someone in that position would actually wear.
I've been googling a few things about marketing interviews, it says for a lot that being up on styles and dressing a little edgy is okay, but I was worried that this outfit is too casual. FI said he thought it looked fine, but he's a guy, he's kind of got it easy. Should I go try to find a suit or jaket? I really don't have any interview outfits because I wasn't plannning on doing professional interviews until after graduation and the wedding.
I think a jacket would be nice, do you have a white button down you could wear instead of the ruffles? It may dress it up if you wore the white button down under the cardigan (unless you can find a cheapo jacket, try target they have cool suits, etc for a great price). wal-mart may have some cool jackets too... i agree that you should show a bit of style and edginess when going on interviews, but i would err on the side of being too formal than too casual.
Even though marketing tends to be more creative than other business related professions, it's still an entry level position, which means it's probably very sales oriented. Keeping this in mind, I would definitely wear a suit. It just shows that you can be professional and that you're serious about getting the job.
It doesn't have to be expensive either, you can get inexpensive suits at Macys. Also, a matching jacket to go with your grey pants would work as well.
Good luck on your interview! I think what you wore is really good. I think because its entry level that a suit isn't necessary but its always a good option because it shows that you're serious about the position and that you're professional. But, when I've interviewed for part time positions or per diem stuff, I've always worn really nice black slacks and a nice white shirt with a sweater vest over it. And I always have to wear heels, can't help it. But I think the outfit is still me, and not too too serious.
i agree that if you're in a creative field you should show some style in your interview outfit but remember that this is still a professional setting so you need to still dress professionally, (to show that you're a professional, and that you take this seriously). I would bring in the creativity through a fun blouse, (like the one you posted above) or necklace or pin but still wear the suit. Even if everyone else at the job dresses super trendy and edgy, i think it's better to be a little more conservative when chosing interview attire. Also you should always dress for the job you want not the job you have so even though it's an entry level position, wearing a suit will only make you look more professional.
Ditto Crebre on checking out target. Also try H&M. they have a good selection of inexpensive suits that usually don't need tailoring.
I'm ditto-ing the suit with some colorful flair-- a bright dress shirt, scarf, one awesome bracelet, something. Marketing is VERY business-orientated, so a suit is def appropriate. It says "i mean business and I'm taking this interview seriously".
I like it...kind of sassy yet still conservative enough for a professional job!
It could be the fact that I am from Florida, but it is very rare there for people to dress in full suits for interviews nowadays...no one wears them in the office in the end...so a nice set of slacks, heels, and shirt are perfectly fine!
Good luck!
I'm a marketing coordinator, and it really depends on what company you are interviewing with. I work for a hospital, so it's super corporate and I'd say suit all the way, no question. However, there is an agency we work with to do some freelancing, and their marketing people are the more "edgy" dressers that you're talking about. But I'd say go the suit route, at least for the interview, and then once you get the job you can feel it out a little more!
Suit! But I love your outfit as a work outfit. Very cute. When I interviewed I wore a black skirt suit with cuff links. They were pink cuff links so I thought that was pretty "edgy" for the job I was applying for. LOL
I'm in the same dilemma...going to an interview Thursday.
I went to the store today..but damn...its like $100 + for an suit. UGH. Came back with nothing. Will try TJ Maxx tomorrow - and I better find something, because I don't have any time left!
@Luli - wow $100 is a great price for a suit. Where did you find that?
Uh-maz-ing!!! I ended up taking all your advice and went to Forever 21, found a pencil skirt and black jacket with a colored top underneath (less than $40!!!) and wore that. My interviewer complimented my outfit and we had a nice get-to-know-you session, and she asked me back for a 2ND INTERVIEW!!! I'm so excited, the company sounds great, but now i have a second interview tomorrow and I need another outfit, but now that I felt it out I feel a lot better and I have a shopping buddy tomorrow morning. I also have another interview tomorrow afternoon for a management postion, I feel truly lucky and blessed right now.
that's awesome! I'm glad everything went well and i'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
Congrats!! I was just going to tell you to wear a suit or something similar, but so happy to hear it worked out! Good luck!!
congrats!!! good luck with all your other interviews :)

I got the call today to interview for an entry level marketing/sales position in the area. I have my resume and references ready and on hand, but I don't know what to wear. I had an interview today at a potrait studio and I wore the outfit below with grey heels, is it appropriate? Is it too much? Should I rush out and try to find something tomorrow morning/afternoon before the interview? All these photos are courtesy of New York & Company's website.
