While sitting in my house tonight, I smelled a very faint burning smell. It smells like someone having a campfire, but I don’t see anyone in my neighborhood doing that. I noticed it slightly stronger in the basement by the furnace and water heater. I am NOT handy, and looked around, and everything looks as it always does. It seems slightly less now. I am being a little paranoid. FH is out of town and I don’t want to burn the house down! Reassurance please!

Call someone to help you look. How old is the house? When was the last time it was checked?

@TopazWedding: I don’t have anyone to come. House was built in 01. Furnace last checked about 2 years ago, and has been fine.
ETA: smell seems better. Hoping I was just freaked out over nothing.

Definitely check it out! It could be nothing, but it could just be a really small fire right now… Have someone help you look!
I was a waitress in a bar for a while and was putting in a drink order (the waitress computer was in the back away from the bartender’s area) and I smelt a funky burning smell (smoke and burning plastic), no one else smelt it at first, but slowly it got stronger and we couldn’t figure out where it was coming from, it smelt like some kind of electrical fire but we couldn’t figure it out… It took us about 10 minutes but it was a trash can, someone had thrown a lit cigarette into the trashcan and it caught fire! Luckily no one was hurt and the trashcan was only minimally melted on the bottom, but it was really scary thinking what could have happened if we hadn’t started looking for it sooner (obviously it would have stared smoking more and we would have found it, but it could have gotten out of hand quickly!)

@guitargirl: Yea… I didn’t want to post my horror story, but my FI’s house burnt down, he said he saw a spark in the dishwasher (area where the fire started) they thought nothing of it and went to bed.. I am NOT saying this is going to happen to you, and they did not know it was the dishwasher, but I would rather be safe than sorry.
