I need an outside opinion on our wedding venue search. I wanted an outdoor, garden ceremony and indoor reception, but we just haven’t found a place to accomodate both. Since a lot of guests will be traveling to attend, we would strongly prefer to have both in one location.
My concern with having an outdoor reception is that if it is too wet or hot, we don’t have an indoor backup. Also, I want the reception to be a rockin party and am not sure if things will get rolling as much outside? Please tell me that last fear is unfounded.
Here are two of our top picks. Please tell me which one you like best!
Option 1: All outdoor. Privately-owned and very accomodating. Very flexible on decor (little to no restrictions), so I could definitely have the charming DIY feel. Has four indoor restrooms and bride’s suite to get ready in. Very beautiful garden space. Reception would take place under pergola, which we could drape for shade or has a tent-like topper in case of rain.
Cocktail area to the left, pergola to the right:
Under the pergola:
Option 2: Outdoor courtyard. No greenery. Beautiful, large indoor room. Artsy. Booked for the month we are looking at, so we would need to change months, which might not be as big of a deal since it has the indoor space. Art center which would most likely have as many as three events happening, but this area is in a seperate building from others. Parking may be tight, but not a huge issue. Not extremely pretty from the outside (used to be a slaughterhouse, refurbished into art galleries, shops, and event space.)
PS- Sorry the photos are wonky, but I just googled and used what I could find.

The one courtyard picture did not load. But from the few pictures I did see, I love the outside venue. I may be a bit partial because mine will be all outside as well. But the pictures of it look beautiful

Thanks, I changed the courtyard picture. I am really leaning towards the first one, but my mom and Fiance are wavering over the weather issues. I want to get the hive’s opinions before I decide what I want to push for!

I LOVE option 1 but is there a rain backup?

@MrsCoachBtoBee: I thought the same thing. #1 as long as there is a rain plan.

Option 1 is really pretty but I love option 2. I think the courtyard could make for some really pretty pics.

The problem with option one is that there is no indoor option. Tent option only. Which is fine if it it light to moderate rain, but if the rain is heavy, the ground would be awful. Luckily there is rarely more than a half-inch of rain in June here, and it *probably* wouldn’t rain at all.
We have a Kentucky tradition here that I am totally going to do if we go the outdoor route. When the weather is perfect for your wedding, you bury a bottle of Kentucky bourbon whiskey and then dig it up on your wedding day so you will have that same perfect weather. I need all the luck I can get! 🙂

What is the weather like in your area around June? Hot I’m assuming? (I’m from Midwest…it could still be snowing here in June, so I don’t know 🙂
As long as there is a tent back up (with a possibility to add side tent “walls” for sideways rain, etc…planning for the worst) I would go with for option one.

I love the courtyard in number 2 a lot but overall I love option 1. Both of them are gorgeous venues!

I like them both, but if I had to choose…..Option 1. I love an outdoor wedding!

In early June here, it is typically in the mid 70s. Highs usually in the mid-high 80s and lows usually in the low 70s or high 60s. Usually one inch or less of rain.
The past ten years on our date (according to Farmer’s Almanac), there has been rain twice:
2010, 1.07 inches
2004, 0.03 inches
Kentucky weather can be pretty crazy. We are definitely a “dress-in-layers” city, because you never really know what you are going to get. But Farmer’s Almanac makes me feel pretty good about it.
ETA: The humidity is the least predictable part I think. It is awful here!

The first venue is SO pretty! But I love the look of the open courtyard, and you would get your indoor reception! Can you maybe make it more green and lush through decor?

What abou rain?! That is something you can’t plan your little heart out on! I loved the first one for sure but if there isn’t a back up plan I would reconsider.

The first one, its gorgeous…my opinion is biased though I want to have my wedding there so of course its my favorite!

Option 2 picture is actually my friends wedding! FUNNY! Mellwood Art Center is nice but the courtyard they married in is vary narrow and not sure how many ppl it would seat (if expecting a large group). However the inside room is HUGE and a great reception space. They do book up fast there. They were my first option but not available on my date.
