The key is going to be when they get a couple more stages into it and start adding that lace or whatever makes up the second tier.
How do you like the bow? Is it enough material?
Milly did my wedding dress and I love it. Let me know how I can help.
beautiful dress! My one concern is some puckering at the seams, especially in the back ... unless they're going to be covered by lace?
Yeah, those were two of the things I noticed as well. I think I want the bow to be thicker. And those back seams do look awfully stretched...Also, I *think* that I want the silk layer to be a little longer in the front. And I think I might want it to be more of a mermaid cut...it almost looks A-line to me now, especially from the back. thanks for your replies!!!
The seams look VERY poorly sewn. Even if they're going to be covered in lace, they will still make you look bumpy (for lack of a better word) the way they are now. Not okay.
Also, I can't REALLY tell, but the fabric looks a light thinner/lighter than that in the model picture; it's kind saggy/droopy in some of the panels (i.e. it looks cheap). This will more easily be covered in the lace panel sections; the skirt I'd be concerned about if I were you. Who knows though, a good pressing/steaming may take it out.
Finally, the waistband looks almost pink in some of the photos; is it supposed to be made of the same fabric? It may be a lighting issue.
Have you seen a sample of the lace they plan to use?
@Aileen: Love the dress! I agree that the bow should be thicker. It looks out of proportion with the waist band right now. Also, the seems are poorly sewn, but is that the actual dress? or a pattern they will be using for your dress? (i.e. recutting out of better fabric?) Anyway I also think the top layer should be a little longer in the front like you mentioned. It looks very short compared to the back. I personally love the shape of the dress right now, but your right, it does look a little A-line so if your wanting more of a mermaid I would have them shape it up some more.
Hope that helps. Can't wait to see the finished product!!
Such a pretty dress! I was just wondering if you want the waist band to be a little bit higher? It looks higher on the model, but I think it would look good both ways.
I just re-read my post and realize it sounds a little ... harsh. I didn't mean it that way; hopefully that stuff is fixable/improvable. It really is a pretty dress, and if I weren't looking at it with an intentionally critical eye, I don't think I'd notice most of the minor defects. :)
I agree that the bow should be larger in the back. Also, I understand your concern about the mermaid cut. But I think you have to remember that in a lot of mermaid/trumpet dresses, you lose some of that look in the back part of the dress because of the train. I think you chose a nice design for your dress. I hope it turns out well!
Thanks everyone! Daydreamwanderer, I definitely wanted harsh so no worries. It is a test dress (I think it's just made out of white cotton) so the fabric is most definitely cheap and lightweight :) I assume that they'll take more care with the seams on the real dress, but I should convey that. I really appreciate all your input! I'll post pictures again when I see the changes to the test dress.
Aileen,
Thanks so much for posting that... I'm seriously considering going through Milly Bridal myself, so it's nice to see the process. Remember that picture is a "mock up" so don't worry too much about puckers in the seams and cheapness of fabric. That's sorta how a mock up should be; they're not going to use the "good stuff" for a trial run. I agree with everyone else about the bow, make it bigger. And maybe it would look more mermaid cut if the flair started lower? I don't know much about that style...
Stephanie
I don't think it looks very mermaid-ey...the "flair" part looks kinda high. I'm just nto seeing your knees being at that seam the way they are on the model. Just make sure they have your measurements exact--that dress looks like it should fit snug tot he knees.
Otherwise, considering it's a mock up, it's pretty spot on. The band might need to be a little thicker, though.
Stephanie, let me know if I can give you any more info! I just joined the Milly Bride group over at Project Wedding last night.

Under the post your dress thread, you can see other brides' dresses/test dresses. Might be helpful.
I have talked with a lot of brides about their milly bridal experience online and have asked a lot of questions. I've also chatted with the Milly folks via email and ordered samples of the fabric ($1 each but well worth it I think before you do something like this). The fabric samples I got were of high quality and no different then the dresses i've seen in the boutiques, I even smuggled mine in my purse and tried to match up the way they felt as I was in the stores. The test dress is on crappy and thin fabric just to make a mock up of the design. So, I wouldn't worry about the fabric or the puckering seams. It's probably due to the thinness of the fabric...I sew, so I know how this can be an issue. Since it's just a test dress to see if they have the design as you want it, I wouldn't think twice about that. You could just say to them that you want to be sure the seams won't be puckered on the real dress like they are on the test dress just to put it out there on the off chance there is an issue...
The things i do notice about the mock up dress are that the flare should start a little lower to give more of the mermaid look and also, I agree that the fabric layer of the dress should be a bit longer where it cuts off before the lace. Otherwise, I think it looks pretty good. You have to go into it with the expectation that it's not going to be absolutely exact and you did make some changes to make the dress your own, so it will be a little different...also, for making a dress from just a picture, I think they do an astonishing job.
I think I'm going to order my dress from them really soon. And, I'm also going to check out that project wedding thread that was just posted.
Oh yeah, and like what ejs said..i think the band/sash could be a wee bit thicker as well. It seems a little more substantial on the inspiration dress even though she's sitting down and it's hard to see.
oooh Aileen thanks so much for that link!
I'm lucky that I have a professional seamstress as a very close friend. I wouldn't want to put her in the position of making my dress, but she thinks Milly's is a good idea. She can get good measurements for me and do any alterations after. I've been doing a lot of research online and it really seems that if you're OK getting the knock-off and not name brand, Milly's is the way to go. Albuquerque just lacks in salons; especially ones that have plus size samples. Plus I can get EXACTLY what I want by putting all the good pieces of different dresses together.
I'm so happy I found this thread!
I'm planning to order my dress from Milly in a few weeks. I'm planning to use the Marisa dress #737 http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com/dresses/5773/Marisa-737-Size-4.html that I tried on at the bridal shop already. I fell in love with it but the price was insane -- $1700!!! I'll tweak the dress a bit as well -- maybe add lace at the hem, make the train a bit longer, lower the neckline, etc. I've already been exchanging emails and even chatted online with them and they said they'll charge me $485 (including the $60 shipping via DHL to california). to use silk organza for the overlay/top layer & silk charmeuse for the underlayer (instead of bridal satin). I'm just waiting for them to get back to me since I wanted to get fabric samples from them.
Again, thanks Aileen for posting your real-life experience with Milly! It's reassuring to read that someone has recently gotten their dress made with them and so far it's a good experience. My bridesmaids & even my mom got me all worried with comments like "what if the dress turns out crappy?" or "i hope they do a good job!".

Hi ladies,
I would love your help and honest opinions on this! I am ordering my custom made dress from Milly Bridal, and I just got pictures of the "test dress." I'm really excited, it looks pretty good to me, but before I okay it to move on to production, I would love to hear any opinions on what could/should be changed.
I wanted it to look like the Alvina Valenta 9662, but a V-neck in front in back instead of the halter. So, the top and bottom will be lace like the Alvina Valenta (first pic attached).
Thanks so much for your time!!!
