With a tight budget and very plain taste, I found nothing at bridal stores to suit my needs. So, I took a chance and bought a dress online from Target. Yes, Target. You can view it here:
Well, the dress fits fine, but I would like to customize it to make it my own. Maybe a few beads/crystals up top, but I’m not sure. I kind of like the look of the beading on the front of the Maggie Sottero “Zoe”. But, I’m not creative enough to come up with anything on my own. Any suggestions?

I’d search your local fabric stores. They might have a beaded ribbon you can sew on the top or under the bust line.
You can also make some flowers out of fabric to add to the dress. Martha Stewart has some great tutorials.

Maybe add a pretty sash in your wedding color? You can find a pretty brooch and add that to give it a little something more and maybe some crystals for the top? Take it to your seamstress and see what she can do for you maybe? It will be a little extra cost to have her do it for you, but probably nowhere near the cost of buying a custom made dress from a shop

Thanks girls! I didn’t know they had beaded ribbon already made…that is a very good (and easy) way to jazz it up a little. Also, I had always assumed I’d rather not add any color to my dress, but that picture with the pink sash is really pretty. I guess I’ll be making a trip to the fabric store sometime this weekend. 🙂
If I don’t find anything I like pre-made, how hard to you think it would be to make a sash or to sew some beads onto the dress?

i had this same idea (buy a plain dress and spruce it up) until i found my dream dress…
i was going to use my mothers wedding dress and take the lace off of it and put it on my dress, sentimental and a dress i designed?

I think customizing it is a great way to go. I want to LOVE the dress, but I can’t justify spending anything over a couple hundred dollars on it. Plus, the day is NOT about the dress…it’s about getting married. 🙂
I LOVE the idea of using something from your mom’s wedding dress…how fun! My mom didn’t have a wedding dress so that isn’t an option for me.
