Marlisle016:  Honey I guarantee that no one will be analyzing your string lights lol. If you’re really unsure, finish planning the rest of your wedding expenses and base your decision on whatever is left over. Good job with figuring out how to DIY by the way! Some people drop so much $ on decorators for things they could do themselves.

We considered doing our DIY ceiling drapery but in the end, it got too hard. Here are some of the things that we encountered:

  • The end of each drape will need a rod attached to it (like dowl) but different venues can hold different sized rods. The end of each drape needs a pocket sewed in to fit the dowl. You can get pre-made drapes from China ( and they’re not too unreasonable but you have to make sure they fit your venue’s specs.
  • Regarding the lights, have you scoped out the power source for the lights? And does your venue require each set to be “tagged and tested” for safety (a faulty wire can short the power for the whole venue!)?<br />
    • If so, does the cool/warm light matter? We’re having a heap of candles on our tables so we needed warm lights – if you aren’t having candles, you might get away with cool.
  • Have you considered the time it will take to decorate the ceiling, and when the venue is available for decorating? The main reason we went with a decorator was that we didn’t want to spend the day of the wedding stressing about decorations or risking FI falling off a ladder (highly likely :)).

Having said all of that, if you’re still keen, I would go with the option that is the easiest (probably #option 1?).

We DIYed a lot of our wedding stuff but for us, the ceiling was definitely not worth the hassel. Best of luck with your decision!

I’m not very crafty… used to think I was but turns out I’m not. Can you spray paint the green wire ones?

Also… I have seen a lot of deco where they wrapped the lights with the tulle so they seemed warmer. Wouldn’t be exact to your inspiration tho…

If you want to use icicle lights but not pay for them, you could maybe borrow some from people you know? They are pretty popular these days…? You could probably just buy the bulbs and change them out so the glow of the lights all match. Just a thought.
