Hi bees, so recently I hit a very substantial weight loss goal (and I’m still losing!) so I decided to treat myself to a slightly (okay, ridiculously) decadent RHR. I have always wanted an emerald cut something, but I didn’t want to commit to an emerald cut E-ring. My dream ring is an emerald cut ruby set in a yellow gold halo. I started looking, but all the pre-made rings were too pricey. Luckily on ebay I found a setting that was PERFECT and bought it for an excellent price. I started looking for a stone, and decided on a lab made ruby. I think they’re actually more beautiful than natural ones, because I really don’t like the look of inclusions, and an eye-clean ruby is easily tens of thousands of dollars or more.
I bought a ruby on ebay that was supposed to be emerald cut, but unfortunately the picture didn’t match the ruby and it was more of a radiant cut (or scissor cut) rather than a traditional step cut emerald. I decided to keep it because it was cheap, but before it showed up I bought another lab ruby from another souce that is more raspberry/purple colored, but is a radiant cut because I assumed the first one was going to be a step cut and I could compare. I still sort of have my heart set on a true step cut ruby, but it’s actually pretty hard to find in the size of my setting and price range 🙁 Now I’ve been looking at this stone that came in, and its starting to grow on me more and more!
So bees, vote on what you think I should do! Here are the pictures I have taken and made so far:
This is the setting-
Here is the ruby I bought that was supposed to be a step cut. I balanced it on top of the setting:
Here is a picture I made in MS paint of the raspberry ruby that’s coming in the mail soon (also radiant cut):
And lastly, here is a picture I made of a true step cut ruby:

When I thought about the stones I had, what my dream ring was, and the poll results, I decided that I would probably regret putting anything other than a true step cut stone in my ring. So I bought another stone, and it was the same stupid scissor cut, again. In all I bought (and returned) FOUR rubies from various places that all had pictures showing the step cut I wanted, but when I recieved them, they were all the radiant/scissor cut. I doled out negative yelp reviews and ebay ratings like candy (after trying to fix my problem of course, I wasn’t rude ) because I was so frustrated. I finally bit the bullet and bought a way more expensive stone because they sent me pictures, so I knew it was an actual step cut. I took it to be set, and even despite a hurricane, my jeweler was able to return my ring a day early!! Here it is:
I am in love with this ring. The picture doesn’t even do it justice. I only had my iphone on me. The red is so much deeper and vibrant in person, and it looks so regal and rich against the yellow gold. It’s a pretty tall setting, noticably higher than my E-ring, so I have to get used to wearing it and not bumping it into things. I’m glad I took your advice bees!!

I didn’t see this thread before, but I think it’s great you went with the step-cut stone. The ring turned out beautifully!
