We stayed at the RIU Cancun about 2 years ago. The hotel was beautiful and the buffet food was amazing. Unfortunately, I think I gained at least 5 pounds in the 5 days we were there :-p We were amazed by the lobby the minute we walked in, and within a minute, they brought us a “welcome drink.” The staff and service were really attentive and accomodating. We had a “junior suite” which I think is really just their standard room. The room was spacious, had a seating area, and a decent balcony. The price was good too 🙂

We noticed that a couple get married while we were there. I’m sure they got incredible pictures. The ceremony was held at a gazebo that overlooks the crystal blue water.

I would definitely recommend it, but this is the only place I have been to in Cancun.

@futuremrsk18:  I’ve been to Secrets Maroma (it’s about 40ish mins from Cancun) and it was AMAZING! Very modern decor, fantastic service, very easy check in (I’ve heard some resorts take hours to check you in!). It was a perfect honemoon spot. Adults only, every room had a hot tub, 24 hr room service, and the beach there is considered one of the best. I loved having my drinks/food delivered right to my beach chair. There were a lot of honeymooners there when we were visiting. I know they just opened one in the main Cancun Hotel strip too (Secrets the Vine).

My cousin went on her honeymoon at Excellence Playa Mujeres and couldn’t stop raving about it.

Good luck!

Are you planning on having children come to the wedding?  One of the nicest resorts I’ve ever been to was the Hard Rock Resort in Punta Cana.  The food, pools, beach and rooms are absolutely to die for! I even watched a wedding take place while I was there and it was beautiful.  Children are allowed at the resort, but as a 27 year old away on a girls trip – I never felt like having children present took away from the overall enjoyment. For example, there is a ‘waterpark’ pool where most of the kids play and a ton of other pools that adults tend to hang at.  I’d be happy to give you more info if you’re interested. 🙂 Good luck with your search!

@futuremrsk18:  does it have to be that time of year?  that is probably the most expensive time of year to travel, it’s also one of the busiest.  just 1 month earlier would be half the price.

are you expecting children at this wedding?  if not, go to an adults only resort because again, this is a busy time for family vacations.  i wouldn’t want to spend my honeymoon (or any vacation for that matter) beside a pool full of screaming kids.

i would not reccomend punta cana. i forget where we stayed but in general the ocean water wasn’t that nice- full of seaweed and pretty cold. (Im also comparing to bahamas/aruba.) but i think the biggest problem is the drinking water. before we went everyone said drink only bottled water, but when we got there we saw that the water was actulaly bottled there. needless to say we both came back sick as others i know. but i also know people who have come back fine. i haven’t been to cancun so i can’t say anything about that but i wouldn’t go back to punta cana.

I have stayed at The Royal in the riviera maya and loved it. I do believe they have a resort in cancun as well (ours was about 40 minutes from cancun). Excellent all around…service, food, everything. We had the smallest room, and it was still massive.

@futuremrsk18:  Maybe you can have the wedding over MLK Day weekend? A long weekend in January. Prices would be better and teachers/kids could still make it. They could all stay for 3 days over the weekend and you guys can stay longer for your mini-moon.

ETA: Majestic Colonial in Punta Cana is a good all-inclusive and would be kid-friendly. And then when they all leave, you can switch over to the sister property, Majestic Elegence.

@PracticalBride:  i second this resort.  i’ve been to dominican republic numerous times and this is by far my favourite resort.

@futuremrsk18:  punta cana beaches are great.  keep in mind, that it only takes 1 storm to fill a beach with seaweed.  that can happen on any beach.  unfortunately, it’s up to nature.
