This is such a personal decision. Any diamond would look good in this setting.
In this setting I would personally go with round. I don't know if you neccesary need to match the shape but I like round with round.
I agree that I think a round stone would look best with that setting. The harsh 90 degree corners of a princess would clash with the delicate pave band. Just my two sense... but you should go with what you think is most beautiful on your hand!
I vote round or something with more rounded corners (like cushion). I have a cushion cut stone on with a pave band and it looks gorgeous (if I do say so myself).
@KatNYC2011: I thought about a cushion at first but the ones they showed me weren't very impressive.
I like the round with that ring. And from what I've heard, when you have similar carat size, round diamonds tend to look larger than princess cut ones. If that matters (or is even accurate).
@ella86: Here's mine:
Sorry for the cell phone pic. It's a radiant cushion so it really sparkles.
My setting looks exactly like that and I love it with my princess-cut! :) I'd say just whatever you want to put in there will look fantastic.
@Ella, then you must've seen some crappy cushions! I have a "modified brilliant round" which a fancy name for a cushion and it is fantastic. But the specs on it are good, too, so think about that!
I like it because, frankly, everybody i know has a round or a princess and I like to go against the grain, so this is sort of the best of both worlds =]
A friend of mine has a radiant, though, and holy smokies it's gorgeous.
I am going to have to go back in there and look at center stones again, lol. When we first went to pick out the ring I asked them to bring out round, princess, and cushion cuts. I only looked at one cushion so maybe they have others that are more "cushiony". The cushion I looked at was more elongated with rounded corners which I wasn't too fond of.
I love the way princess' look but I absolutely love the brilliance of rounds.
I also think that on my petite hand princess' look harsh on my size 5 finger and stubby hand hahaha. I am definately going to look at cushions again.
Ella, my cushion is almost a perfect square. They come in all kinds of shapes. i've seen a couple of elongated ones, though.
As far as facets, mine is actually cut to have more facets than a traditional round. So they can be cut super duper sparkly, too. I've also seen some dull ones--it seems like they're sort of a strangely cut diamond in that you KNOW a princess has 4 90 degree angles or a round is round, but a cushion can be all kinds of wonky.
@Misstnt: I love yours! Mine is very similar! Just a cell phone pic so it isn't the best quality
I was told by our jeweler that round cuts reflect light FAR better than square. Not sure how that translates into cushion cuts, though I do like the look of them. I'd vote for round or cushion.
I like them all! But I have a princess cut with almost the same bands and I don't think it looks bad at all!! You should try some on in a store and see which one looks best on your hand!
What a lucky girl! Both bands are beautiful.
Personally I am a round cut stone girl myself. After thinking I liked Princess or Cushion my fiance and I went shopping and I realized how hard it was to compare prices on "different" cuts. Also there were so many grades and different shapes it was hard to decide.
We found that the round is classic and using the jewelers GIA reports we could basically compare apples to apples. Otherwise it was too hard, we were sure if we were getting ripped off or simply being charged too much.
Have you looked at any center stones yet?
I personally love a princess cut. However, a round cut is the most geometrically sound and is going to give you the most reflectivity, so if how much your ring sparkles matters to you, you might want to take the into consideration. But really it's a personally decision.
I actually have a HOF with a Dream cut diamond which has the look of a princess but the properties of a round. Let me just say that baby shines! (color and clarity also factor in as well)
"I thought about a cushion at first but the ones they showed me weren't very impressive."
I have a square "hearts and arrows" ideal-cut cushion diamond, and it SPARKLES! Like seriously blinding in the sun. I, too, would say you just weren't shown very good cushions.
In my opinion, cut (cut quality, not shape of cut) is the most important of the 4-C's. The better the quality of cut, the more fire and sparkle you get.
I would also advise getting a stone from a reputable online vendor rather than a traditional jewelry store. I got my diamond from GoodOldGold and it appraises significantly at more than we paid. (We paid 2/3 of what the diamond's appraisal value is.)
At GoodOldGold, they show you all the different imaging, details of where any inclusions are, etc. All greatly magnified, so you really get a lot more information than you would in a regular jewelry store. And you can download the "Gem Adviser" file that simulates how your stone will sparkle based on the angles.
mine is an oval in basically that same setting. don't have a pic on this computer, but its my avatar.
I say cushion (with a L/W of 1), but round would also look great.
@bridecat200: Yes, I currently have a round set in it.
We are going back in today to look at some more cushions.
@abbyful: It wasn't so much that the diamond didn't sparkle. It reflected light beautifully I just didn't care for the shape of this particular cushion.
I think princess is the most beautifully cut stone, but I am biased because I love them, and wear one! I also like cushion cut stones because they can be very unique, but I agree with posters above who mentioned that they can be poorly- or well-cut. Be careful out there in diamondland!
We went back today and looked at all 3 shapes again...
I pretty much ruled out the princess right away. I think I like it on other people's hands but not mine. It just didn't look good.
So I was down to cushion and round. I loved both.
Ultimately I stuck with the original. ROUND. It just sparkled so wonderfully, complimented the setting and my hand, plus it will never go out of style.
Thank you to everyone who put in your two cents. I really appreciate it. When I get my ring ( I beg for it everyday!) I will be sure to post the final result! <3
@MissCosmopolitan: The prong heads are interchangeable so it could be switched to a 4 (which I think I am going to do anyways).
what is your finger and hand shape?
its its short and small like mine princess cut would look great
if the finger isnt too short or too small a round woull look lovely
so its really up to you hand shape but its a lovely set ^_^
even with out the center stone
@Sabrina_Lee: I actually feel the oposite. As I stated above I have very small hands but feel the princess looks too harsh and awkward on my small hand. I like the way the round cut is softer. Thanks for helping though!
I have a round stone, which sparkles A LOT, but I've kind of been crushing on the cushion cut look lately. So pretty! It's all just a matter of knowing the facts (which sparkles more, etc.) and knowing your own preference. :)
