I just need some confidence & guidance on this.
I joined a volunteer organization just recently. They asked for a 1 year commitment which I was fine with (after all, I’m not moving away any time soon, and it takes time to learn things). They said it would be 2-5 hours of work each week. There was not a lot of specific information about what I’d be doing, but they showed me their website & they’re a 501(c)3 org.
Well, I guess I shouldn’t have agreed so quickly. It’s a group that’s just getting off the ground after a hiatus (which is why they’re looking for new members). They meet in an area that’s about 1 hour from my home or work by public transit.
Our first official group meeting was really disorganized — started 30 minutes late and went a half hour longer than expected. The two leaders were rambling and off topic and kept interrupting each other. I feel weird b/c the other volunteers didn’t seem bothered by it. It seems like to accomplish the group’s goals is going to take 5 hours or more each week, every week.
I’m not sure if I should hang in there and see where it goes, or cut ties early so they have time to find someone else. Maybe I should tell them I’d like to transition out but I’ll stay while they look for someone.
I know the ‘bees are always willing to weigh in on my decisions, so, what do you think I should do?
