    Hey ladies

I am in the process of Building - we are due to start in 6 weeks and I am in the joyous nightmare of  choosing colors and so forth.

Hubs and I have decided that we like neutrals. White/grey and black. We are a quite modern in our tastes but still in tune with realistic spaces (meaning, it has to be liveable and not just look pretty for the sake of it)

We have decided to go with tiling throughout the main area and hallway and the bedrooms and theatre/living area with carpet.

However, i am SOOOOO stuck on the color of the tiles. Should i go white throughout the main area? and grey tile in the bathroom?  or go white all out? or grey throughout with white as the splash backs and decor of the cupboards and bench in the bathroom?

Can you see how the options are well just ongoing!

Can someone help me out here? what would you choose? is white too hard to clean? is grey too dark? to unusual?

    Help a sister out pls!

Do you have any pictures of the different tiles you are thinking of for each area? I am such a visual person, I need that!

I think your choice will depend on your lifestyle and if you have any pets! We put white floor tile in one bathroom only and its a bear to keep clean,so I can only imagine a whole house full of it. Rather then be a slave to a floor, why not get something that combines several colors but is still dark enough to hide some of the inevitable dirt that gets tracked in.

We put tannish/ivory Travertine from our foyer through the hall and kitchen. That tile hides everything and was a perfect choice with a dog and cat. We did a similar color in another full bath and a deeper travertine in our master bath. Starting with the one white floor made me rethink my choices of light and bright.

Can you bring some tiles home and place them around where you live right now just to look at them and see how you'll feel about being surrounded by so much light color?

oo my white tile picture didnt post!! and neither did my super long paragraph of me loving dark to really light colors and a few other pics! wierd! :/ We have a cat but she doesnt leave hair around. My friend said a light grey does not show much dirt so it might be a good idea.

Its just hard to find what is that "intermediate' colour that you know isnt going to be a pain to clean!

@ccranetobe: I like that pic that you posted. I don't think the grey is too unusual, but I do think it could look too sterile or cold without the proper "warm & cozy" furniture/decor. In that pic, there is a nice fluffy rug, pillows and a dark, warm wood color accents.

@sparkles_10: yeah.. i love the rugs.. im a very much a rug person. I really like having the versatility of having neutral colors tiles. Because i buy heaps of color rugs and when i want to change the accent color of my house.. i can. i.e chuck out a blue rug, go with a red rug? put the red rug in a cupboard and break out a black and white rug..

See so many options? just hard to choose a base!

My advice is no white floors, whether it be carpet or tile. White stains, even if you are the extremely clean and neat-freak type it will end up dingy.

And do darker grout, not white grout. White grout looks good for a few months, but it will end up being very obvious where high-traffic areas are (lower traffic areas will be white, higher traffic will be darkened and stained), and you won't be able to even bleach it out.

I love the grey tile you posted. Except make sure the grout is dark enough to hide stains (looks like white grout int he picture, I'd go with at least medium-to-dark grey grout.).

@ccranetobe: no I dont think so at all. I think they are really beautiful. They are neutral at the same time because you can pretty much do any colors with them.

I agree that they look like a good choice, as the color looks more mottled than solid. Good luck and lucky you to have the chance to do a whole house full of great new things!

I love the grey!  We have white tiles/white grout in our kitchen and half bath.  And seriously they look so gross, as you can see exactly where we walk.  Not cool.  But like I said I LOVE the grey!!!!

I LOVE white tiled kitchens! :) I don't think white tile is hard to keep clean, but as abbyful mentioned, white grout is.

I really like the grey tiles you posted. I think white floors, whether carpet or tile, are gorgeous but SUCH a hassel to keep up. My mom got this gorgeous wool white carpet put through out my parents house and she ended up replacing a lot of it because it showed every wear and tear (even a hair or a piece of lint) even though she was good about cleaning it. I like the idea of a modern but liveable home, I can't wait to see your finished product :)

Congratulations on the building starting soon...very exciting!

I would go with the grey tiles.  My sister has white tiles in her bathroom and with 2 kids, everything shows up and it pretty hard to clean.

I really love the grey tiles. Personally I'm not a fan of white floors in general, and the grey looks really cool and durable as well.

I think you should go with the grey! I really like how it looks, and it won't show as much dirt. = )

I agree with Abbyful, grey with a matching grey grout. There's nothing worse than BRIGHT WHITE grout with dark tiles, and then the yucky stained grout 4 weeks later that you'll hate. Don't go darker than the tiles though, just a shade lighter.

I like those gray tiles you posted!  I also love slate floors in kitchens.

My parents had a house with TONS of off white 12x12 tiles and it wasn't too terrible to keep clean (just the grout was horrible) but when they chipped, the tile underneath is dark so it REALLY shows the chip.  Obviously its a real PITA to replace a chipped tile so thats something to consider.

    Best luck deciding!

I LOVE the picture you posted!  Beautiful!

I don't find white tiles to be that hard to keep clean though.  We have white tiles in our two bathrooms and our kitchen and mopping them on occasion is all it takes to keep them looking nice.

thanks ladies!! i am going to go with the grey tiles! and thanks for the majority confirming my instinct that white may look good for awhile but could be high maintenance!

My next project is the cabinetry.. who knew that you could get cabinets in 200 FRIKKEN COLORS!!!

     zomg!
