Are you religious? If you are Catholic, for instance, you may have restrictions on what can be performed. If you are a Christian, try looking up Christian wedding songs. Amy Grant has a whole library of appropriate songs that are easily learned and performed.
As a professional wedding singer, I've sung showtunes, rock ballads, classical numbers, etc. Basically, you name it, and it's been done. The most popular songs, however, are "The Prayer" and "Ave Maria."
No actually...its not going to be a religious ceremony at all. I am only having a couple readings and then our vows. I just wanted to throw in a song so its a little longer than 10-15 minutes. I am looking for something most people would be familiar with. And something about love, or being in love. Doesn't necessarily have to be a love song from one person to the another though. I mainly listen to hip hop and r&b, and know very little music outside those genres, but I am trying to steer clear of anything too r&b-ish. I do like some acoustic music though, just don't the artists names.
Do you listen to "classic" music like The Temptations, Supremes, etc.? "Ribbon in the Sky" by Stevie Wonder is one of my favorite songs to sing at weddings! Natalie Cole has a great song called "I Do." "Let's Get Married" by Jagged Edge is also a choice.
Since you want something that a lot of people know, I'd go the Stevie Wonder route or another classic or standard song (I can make more recommendations). Going too poppy can turn some people off.
That Stevie Wonder song might work! Any other recommendations along those lines would be awesome.
I am a teacher, and a group of my students are going to sing a song while we are signing the papers. I would love to hear some more ideas as well!
"This is My Promise" by the Temptations (a bit harder for a solo singer)
"I'll Be There" (Michael Jackson or Mariah Carey) is SUCH A WONDERFUL wedding song, especially for right after vows.
"Cant Help Falling In Love" is pretty timeless.
"All My Love" by KC and JoJo is a bit contemporary.
"Endless Love" by Diana Ross
"I. O. U. Me" by BeBe and CeCe Williams is fabulous, but I haven't seen it done at a wedding before.
@labluver: I think there is a great chorus version of "Signed Sealed Delievered." It's pretty tounge and cheek... but oh so cute!
I've sung at many a wedding, and Ava Cassidy's 'Songbird" is gorgeous. It's very pretty any the accompanying instrument could easily be a guitar or a piano, whichever is availeble.
Our singer is doing "At Last" by Etta James right after the vows. We almost did "From this Moment" by Shania Twain. Both are great for the middle of a ceremony!
@ohmybears48: all great ideas. I do have I can't help falling love on my list of possibilities as well. I love that song, and everyone knows it! Thanks for the great ideas.
@elecampbell: I love At Last! But I almost think thats too familiar than I would perfer. It really is a gorgeous song though. I hope it turns out beautiful! I will have to check out Ms. Shania! Thanks!
How about Con te Partiero (with you i will go) . . . it's beautiful. . . but more popera than pop . . you could have it sung with the English lyrics.
@capergrrl: Definitly checking that one out! Our wedding is a lovebird theme. Sounds like it could be fitting!
@Miss Mochaccino: Omg my mom is obsessed with Andrea Bocelli. I do know that song and actually love it since I grew up listening to it. Thanks for the suggestion!
I should probably mention this is a very non-traditional ceremony and the singer is a female who does have a powerful voice.
Someone already suggested this, but I had a secular ceremony and I walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of "Can't help falling in love" by Elvis. You could use the instrumental track and she could sing along, or if you are going a cappella, it's an easy enough song to sing and stay in tune.
@GroovyHippieChick: Thats also in the running. I am thinking I might do 2 songs. My mom actually picked out that song.
I really like Annie's Song by John Denver, but my sister already used it at her wedding. But it's another good suggestion for anyone else looking for ideas.
@Jane323: Yay! Love that song! It makes me cry every time. Annie's song is beautiful too - I had that at my first wedding.
I had a girlfriend sing the Norah Jones version of Love me Tender.
I still have an instrumental version of the song (acoustic guitar) that she sang to, if you want to borrow it! It's just an mp3
i've always thought that 'the colour of my love' by celine dion would be a beautiful song for a wedding. it's not really popular but the lyrics are so touching; especially the last verse. it always brings a tear to my eye. definitely listen to it.
@Jennybean883: I actually am considering Cant Help Falling In Love....I came across a Ingrid Michaelson version of it, and it is beautiful.
I really really really like that interpretation of Love Me Tender. I might actually take you up on that offer for the instrumental! Can you send it to Janey.530@live.com?

I will be having a family friend perform a song during the ceremony, however, I have no idea what song yet! Please help me think of ideas! I just don't even know where to start to look. I perfer something that the majority of the people will recognize. Any suggestions are helpful and appreciated!
