So I'm going to visit the mister in about a week. We've been together for ~7 years, were together the first 3, then an hour apart at different schools, and in June he moved cross country for work. We haven't seen each other in almost 4 months. I'm trying to think of ideas to make it special, but I'm on a super tight (read: non-existent) budget. I've thought about cooking nice meals, etc, but he has a tiny apartment and 2 roommates, so I don't want to completely take over their space. Other than that, I'm stumped.

We've been together a long time, so I'm trying to use our reunions as a chance to spice things up a bit. He's in NYC, but will be busy at work several of the days of my visit so it is kind of falling to me to plan ideas in a city I'm completely unfamiliar with.

Does anybody who's done the LD thing (or not?) have any ideas on how to make our short reunion special??

Not an LD'er, but very familiar with New York (FI is a New Yorker).  What are your personalities/interests?  Tell us your hobbies, the sort of stuff you're interested in and do for fun and we might be able to give you better advice.

Would he be into visiting museums?  There are a ton of free museums you can visit!  Or they will have a "suggested admission" fee which you can skip if you can't afford it.  The Met and the American Museum of Natural History both fit into that category...

The Brooklyn Botanical Garden is free every Tuesday, and for two hours on Saturday:

    http://www.bbg.org/vis2/hours.html

You could pack a picnic for him, and then eat it indoors at some places.  Fat Cat is a jazz club in the West Village - you are allowed to bring outside food there, amazingly!

    http://www.fatcatmusic.org/events.html

They also have ping pong tables and other games available!

Or you could have your picnic at the Winter Garden near the former WTC... there are lots of privately owned public spaces listed here:

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/priv/priv.shtml

I dunno what sorta things you guys like, but hopefully some of those low cost activities hit the spot!

Just a suggestion about visiting museums, if you go to the Met, pretty much everything is included in your admission fee (or lack thereof), but at the AMNH, the entrance fee (or lack thereof...sometimes the workers there give you an attitude about giving less than the full amount, which is unfair, and doesn't happen at the Met) gets you only into the regular exhibits.  The IMAXs, planetarium, etc.--all the cool stuff--is extra, and I'm pretty sure those fees are mandatory.

This is going to be some unorthodox advice.  Unless you guys are both really into art, I might skip the Met.  I'm an Art History minor who wants to go into museum work and honestly, every time I've gone to an art museum with somebody, we've ended up talking very little, wandering around at different paces or feeling guilty because we didn't want to linger over a piece for the same amount of time as the other, and, if it's the Met, being suffocated by the masses of people there at most times of the day (and screaming children...so many screaming children).  Worse is going with someone who has no interest in art (and that is totally fine!).  Everyone feels pressure to seem 'cultured' and show some interest in art, but frankly, art isn't for everyone, and every type of art certainly isn't for everyone.  People uninterested in art tend to feel dragged around, bored, listless...so not romantic.  This can even happen to people who ARE interested in art but just aren't feeling up for museum-going that day.

The Met and the AMNH are very near and dear to my heart and I'm actually working at both this summer, but I would never recommend them to a couple with a short period of time to spend together, looking for some romantic ideas! I just don't think they tend to be romantic.  The museums are such hot tourist spots in New York, but I think it's mostly because they're so important, not necessarily tourist-friendly (especially art museums; the AMNH tends to be a lot more engaging and interactive for a wider variety of people and has a much better chance of sparking awesome conversation, imo, unless you already have an interest in art).

In short, before committing to go to an art museum, consider whether it will sustain the interest of you and your man, and be honest with yourselves; it's totally a drag to feel pressured to spend several hours in a place you don't want to.  If you do decide to go, the Met is huge and can't be seen in just a few hours, so read about what's featured in each gallery and I would strongly suggest selecting a max of maybe four that the two of you would be interested in.  Much more than that tends to be overkill.

Just my two cents.  Maybe my experiences are dramatically different from others'.

I second Mr Bee's suggestion of Fat Cat, it's SUCH a fun place to hang out!

Also, walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is a pretty iconic part of NYC, and I've hear the Highline is awesome too, although I haven't been yet.  Or you could take the Staten Island ferry for a free site-seeing trip of Manhattan and Statue of Liberty.

Wandering around Central Park for a few hours is always fun too...

Also, you could go down to the TKTS booth in Times Square to look for discounted tickets to Broadway shows, sometimes they can be very affordable this way!

If you want a smaller museum, the Museum of Art and Design, which is right by Columbus Circle, is only 4 or 5 small floors, and they have this amazing exhibit on paper cutting right now--crazy images created only out of paper. It's one of FI and I's favorite museums, and it's very manageable.

Ditto, mrbee and veganglam, tell us what sort of things you're looking for/what you're hoping to do!

Thanks so much for the suggestions! I'm an art major wasting away in the wastelands of the middle of nowhere, so I am super pumped about all of the museums. I think during the days while he's at work I'll be hitting those up for sure. The Museum of Art and Design sounds fun- it's not one I've heard of before. I'll have to check it out.

However... the mister is not so art oriented. He's a good sport, but a day at the museum is not something he can get excited about. We like trying new restaurants (and new types of cuisine) and exploring new places together- he's been in NYC for less than a year but with a very time consuming job he hasn't had much chance to explore. I was thinking maybe we could check out different neighborhoods and try some fun restaurants.

Also, while not NY related, I was thinking it might be fun to shoot some pictures together- I have a great old manual camera, and I thought it could be fun to teach him a bit about photography. Its a pretty basic way to dip your toes into creative pursuits- but I don't want it to feel like I'm pressuring him. Do any non-creative types have any input- would that sounds like a fun activity to you, or a chore?

Where are you located, and what's your budget for meals?  Also - do you guys drink beer or wine with dinner?  Cuz that's where dinner can really start adding up.

You might want to check out some BYOB places!  I used to live near Tartine in the West Village, and it was famous for good food and no liquor license... i.e., they encourage you to bring your own wine to dinner!  Very cozy.

    http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/tartine/

My favorite wine bar in the Village is 'ino.  Wine and panini... I love this place and it's actually where I took Bee on our first date!

If your mister drinks beer, there are two breweries that I know of in Brooklyn (where I live now)... both of which have tours.  The first is Brooklyn Brewery, but the tour there isn't so great.  The second is Six Point Craft Ales, and I hear the tour there is incredibly personal and fun!

    http://beer.donavanhall.net/longisland/?n=46

That Six Points tour sounds like a blast!

Oh and also, if you're looking to do something cheap... you can't beat the Brooklyn Flea:

    http://nymag.com/listings/stores/brooklyn-flea/

    http://www.brooklynflea.com/about/

It's indoors for the winter, in the gorgeous lobby of an old bank:

    http://ny.racked.com/archives/2010/01/11/the_brooklyn_flea_and_one_hanson_place_were_made_for_each_other.php

I'm pretty sure that's near Grimaldi's, which is coal fired and is legendary.

Photography might be fun if it was indoors (it's pretty chilly hereabouts)... but then lighting might be tricky.  Not sure hot to manage that one...

Do you guys have a few bucks for a food tour?  The ones in Chelsea and the West Village are fun!  When Mrs. Penguin was in town, Bee sent her on the Foods of New York tour that we love:

    Also, Shake Shack is awesome!

If you are a student (or still have a student ID) a lot of museums will give you discounted admissions. Also, not sure what FI does but many large companies give the museums money and with corporate IDs you can also get in for free or at discounts.

I think MoMA has a Tim Burton exhibit going on now which could be cool for someone who is not very into art.

I also think you have to make it to Little Italy for great food at great prices and make sure to save room for dessert.

Might be a little on the expensive side but cheaper on weekdays and definitely worth it if you spend most of the day there- a place called Spa Castle out in College Point area of Queens. It is modeled after Korean Spas and has saunas and outdoor pools with jets. You can take the subway to Queens and then hop on a free shuttle. nyspacastle.com

Wow, Mr. Bee, you're like my personal tour guide- thank you so much. All of the suggestions are great- I'm so much more excited now with some more concrete ideas of things to do. The enormous amount of information online about things to do in NY is overwhelming- thanks for the ideas everybody.

This is really one of the best online communities I have ever come across. I understand why married bees want to stick around, and why waiting bees like myself want to be a part of it.
