My husband has been poorly with a very sore throat for 4 days now. He can barely swallow any food, has trouble sleeping etc.

We called the health service hotline and said all we can do is wait until it passes.

Does anyone have any good ideas of how to soothe his throat?? It breaks my heart to see him feel so horrible.

been there. This is old school, but it works, hot tea with honey and lemon. I also like the N'ice throat lozenges. Those seem to be the best as far as I'm concerned.

Call a different doctor. He could have strep which can cause heart problems if it goes untreated. Until then warm tea with honey may help, or sore throat spray which helps to numb it... but never listen to a doctor who won't check out a sore throat, especially one that is this severe.

@Moja Milosc:  I know I was a bit worried about that but the lady over the phone asked lots of questions like are there white spots at the back of his throat, are his glands swollen etc. It doesn't really look like strep throat (his throat is just very red, no white spots, not very swollen), just a normal sore throat. Anyway if it's not better by tomorrow I'll definitely take him to the GP on Monday morning.......

@Mrs. Ginger:  Get him some Halls Fruit Breezers.  They'll numb his throat up.  Then start encouraging him to consume brothy soups and even ramen if he can stomach it.  Yeah, I know, salty, but the salt should help his throat.  Also, I'd suggest that he get tested for mono and strep.

EDIT: I had white spots on my throat both times I had infectious mononucleosis.

I would say hot tea (no sugar) with a spoonful of honey.

Either that or gargle with warm salt water OR: Take about a half inch deep of peroxide, dillute it in about 3-4 inches of warm water and gargle with that 2-3 times a day. The peroxide has never failed for me, except when I had mono.

If his sore throat doesn't get better in the next 2 days or so I would highly recommend going to his doctor or a MedExpress or Walgreens clinic or something (if you guys have those where you live). Strep and mono need to be treated ASAP or they can both get pretty nasty (trust me, been there, done that).

Good luck; hopefully he gets well soon!
