You can deposit it in to your own account and write a check to that person like you said. Or you can just return the money order to them and allow them to go through the refund procedures. It will take about 6 weeks for them to get a refund if you choose that route. So i suggest you just write the check.

I have a question...please help.
I was on a committee to plan an event, and had people send in checks/money orders to put towards tickets for the event. The event is cancelled, so I'm shredding the checks. But I did get one money order, and I am not sure what to do.
I can't shred this right...since it was already paid for? I assume I have to desposit the money order, and just write out my own check to send back to this person?
