    Hello Hive,

I'm having two wedding receptions, one in the states and one in Hong Kong. I need a cheongsam for the HK reception. I'm having trouble finding a cheongsam fabric pattern that doesn't make me go EEK! Bright red and gold dragons make me want to hide under my bed.

My style is boho. I know I'm not going to find a boho cheongsam (ha ha), but I'd like one that is a softer, or darker red, and with a more variegated and flowy pattern. I'm OK with the traditional form-fitting style.

    Here's a dress in a fabric that I *sort of* like. http://www.cheongsam-wedding-dresses.com/red-peony-brocade-cheongsam-tqc017-p-1341.html

Man, I just wish I didn't have to wear red!

Anyone in the same boat? Any advice is much appreciated!

Maybe find someone who will custom-make you a cheongsam, and then you can choose whatever fabric you want.  (Since  it sounds like it's only the fabric that bothers you.)  It's probably slightly more difficult, but not impossible if you live in a moderate-sized city to find a seamstress who will do this.  I would ask at the same places you buy them at.  When I went shopping, some places would actually tell me that if I didn't like what I saw, they'd make me whatever I wanted.

I know what you mean about the fabric - some of it is very bright red... and I don't normally wear red.  I only wore mine for a brief tea ceremony and to great guests as they came into the reception, so I didn't wear mine for very long.

@bug-in-a-rug: Thanks so much for the suggestion! I was actually thinking of going that route and having one made in a red silk dupioni, maybe with a gold lace overlay. Something like that.

Then I found this website, and my jaw dropped to the floor! http://mazzario.blogspot.com/

Unfortunately, their floor-length custom-made cheongsam start at $750. :(  But they are having a moving sale on their in-stock items. Will investigate!

@tealeaf132:  You should consider getting one made in Hong Kong if you're going there for your reception.  My Fiance's grandma went to HK recently was able to get a custom made one done in 2 weeks.  It's much cheaper and more variety! Hope that helps. =)
