@unixfairy: J+J wedding images seem “dull” to me, lacking pop.  Also, I had to go pages on their blog before I found a wedding, seems like they focus more on family portraits.

I like Elegantimages better, but you have to like what you are getting, I would make sure you see REAL recent work, not just go by their website images.  Also, meet them both and see who you click with better.

I think J+J is much better at lighting and technical skills. I can do with less of the editing fluff but that is just me. Over all they definitely know how to use the light to their advantage as well as creating light when they need it. They like to capture details and are good at posed shots but also great at capturing real moments.

Elegant Images on the other hand looks like they only use natural light and in some photos it really shows they needed to create some extra light in order to highlight the subject. When they do, it’s direct flash and doesn’t look that great. They are good at capturing moments but their posing is lacking a bit. Also they WAY overdo the blur tool in their editing and their editing seems all over the place.

But of course this is just my opinion. Good luck!!

Elegant Images’ post processing is a little much for me. Way too much soft blur, and the lighting is not all that great in many of them – and that’s the best of the best for them! I’d go with J&J. Make sure you get to see an entire wedding or 2’s galleries before signing the contract. It’s really important to see how they capture an entire event instead of just their picks for top photos in their portfolio.

@crayfish: are you commenting on their website pics or blog pics?  I only looked at their blog pics and had a opposite impression.

EDIT: I went back and looked at elegant’s websize gallery….holy moly, you are right….less than ideal pics.  I did think the first wedding on their blog was well shot (much better than the website pics).  I tend to skip the website’s and go right to the blogs which show recent work.

I still don’t see much attraction on J+J, the images look flat to me, even on their website.

Are you planning on getting a lot of prints or several books? Is their pricing and quality on those comparable? I found that even when the “time” price was comparable, there were vast differences in pricing and quality for books and prints. πŸ™‚

I prefered elegant images.  Like a PP said, J&J’s photos looked flat. I just didn’t get the sense of emotion from their pictures like I did from Elegant Images.

Go with J&J. They are way better at composition.

+1 to JJ -Photos demonstrate greater skills with composition and content.

Elegant Images is nice. I think the blog is waaaaaaay better that the portfolio. But the quality of photos seem to deteriorate when lighting conditions are rough (some nice flash work in there though).

Let us know who you choose and why!

+1 to choosing J&J if you go with one of these. Elegant has all kinds of issues with focus and grain that they try to cover up with a lot of post processing. I don’t particularly love either choice though :/ Maybe keep looking for one that really blows both of these out of the water? Have you looked at any California-based photogs? There are a lot of really amazing folks out there.

One thing you might want to do is ask each photographer for a list of previous clients that you could contact.  It’s always nice to find out from “real people” what their thoughts were on service, timelines, products, etc.
