Hey, it's your first post - Congratulations! That is a tough spot your in. Can you take it a seamstress and see what she thinks can be done? It might not be to hard to turn into more of an A-line if they alter it. I have no idea on dress structures though.
We may need pictures to help, but I bet it is lovely and accentuates more than it overemphasizes. Both a seamstress or ribbon belt might help make you feel more comfortable!
I'd have to see a pic to give you more detail, but depending on the fabric, I bet you could make a mermaid into an a-line. Or at least soften the look.
Also, the hourglass shape is beautiful. Can you try rockin' what you got?
Rock those curves!
How about a big blinged out/chunky statement necklace too... Sash at the waist may be just the thing too... we need pictures!
Welcome to Weddingbee!! We're glad to have you here.
I just wanted throw in that you shoudl get the opinion of you mom, sisters, friends, etc. I had a friend who is pear shapred (as am I!) and she wore a more mermaid style form fitting dress, and it was super sexy! She really pulled off the hip curves.
It might be easier to help if you share a picture with us...but you have some good ideas already!
Hey MissPear - sounds like we are in the same boat, and I have decided I'm going to put a sash around my waist to define it more. My dress sounds a lot like yours and I feel like it makes me look much wider in the hips than I actually am. I photoshopped a ribbon onto it and I think that that will do the trick.

Here's the link to my post on that, and you can see the pics with and without the ribbon/sash.
Congratulations on finding your dress! Don't be so hard on yourself - we are our own worst critics!
You could always do a longer veil (anything longer than your hips - just to create a longer line or to avoid *stopping short*, as they say) and what about adding a little extra padding in the bust to help balance out your silhouette?
Also, if your shoulders are narrow (i am not sure if you just have a smaller bust but wider shoulders or have both a smaller bust and smaller shoulders) you could also consider weight training to slightly build up the shoulder muscles for more visual balance as well.

Hi Bees,
I was pretty happy getting my wedding dress for a good deal, until I got it in recently and realized it WAY overemphasizes my hips. I have a slight "pear" shape to my body, with a small waist, small bust, and proportionally larger hips. My dress is a strapless dress that is halfway between an A-line and mermaid style, so it hugs my hips pretty tightly. The dress is nonrefundable, and I can't afford to buy another dress!
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Do you think a seamstress could help? Or would adding an accessory (a ribbon) around the waist de-emphasize the hips?
Thanks!
