haha well, congrats!!! I would first decide if you want a big or small wedding, write out potential guest lists, and figure out how much you want to spend and what your actual budget can be.
Then build from there. If you want a small wedding you can look at smaller venues and your budget immediately goes down. If you want a larger wedding you have to find a place large enough for everyone. You have to decide if you want it in or outside, weather for that, time of year..... so many things to think about!
I almost had a panic attack two days after we got engaged
@ms.oregon.state:hahaha thanks for your feedback, ours will be a pretty small wedding( 100-150 people) and congratulationsss on your engagement :)
First off, congratulations! This is a very exciting (and nerve wracking) time for you guys!
I was in the same boat with you. We got engaged a year and about 4 months before our wedding. What I would recommend is basically what the PP said. Figure out the basics, then take it slow. Figure out the size of the wedding and go ahead and start searching for venues. I would even put a deposit down on a venue now if you find one. Some venues book 2 years out depending on where you live and the type of venue you choose.
After that, I would just calm down and not worry about it. A bulk of the planning doesn't come around until about 6-9 months prior to your wedding. Take some time to ENJOY your engagement and ENJOY your fiance before things get crazy. I am SO thankful that we were able to have such a long engagement so we could really soak it up. I can't imagine how stressed out I'd be if I planned a wedding immediately after getting engaged. You need time for each other aside from wedding planning :)
Another thing you'll want to do early is look for a dress. Depending on where you go, it can take months to order and be delivered.
As far as a wedding planner is concerned, we didn't hire one. I know a LOT of people that put down a LOT of money for their planner and had REALLY bad experiences. That's NOT saying they are all that way and I can't give personal experience because I didn't hire one. My dad was out of work while I was planning so he kind of acted like my planner... and he was definitely a life saver. I would do some checking around before you put down any money on a planner just to make sure they are reputable and won't mess you around. I had one friend who decided last minute to extend their wedding an extra hour. While at the reception, the wedding planner sat there pissed off that she had to be there another hour.
I wish you ALL the best in your journey! :) :) :)
@ms.oregon.state: I agree! Start making a guest list so you know how many people you are looking at, and start looking at venues.
100-150 people is quite a range, but maybe safe to look at venues that hold 150 people to start. If you have a particular date in mind, some venues fill up quite early, although you may not have to worry as much with an April wedding depending on your area.
Oh... and I forgot to add that a lot of venues will provide coordinators for you depending on where you go. Granted, they aren't going to set up your floral and DJ for you, but a good venue will contact your vendors to make sure they are there on time and will help set up so you don't have to :)

Hello everyone,
So we have decided on a date- it falls on our 3 year anniversary and it's a saturday so we thought it was perfect however we have no idea how to go about it. First of all is it worth getting a wedding planner, if it is where do you hire one and which ones are the best, second how early do you start planning, what do you book first and lastly how much does an average wedding in new york cost? we are the first among our friends to get married and we were international students so our families are back home, they will be here for the wedding but they would not be able to help us to plan it because they dont live here. Of course I want this day to be perfect, I dont want nothing to go wrong and if a wedding planner can make sure that happens than I would be more than happy to hire one, I just have no idea how these stuff work.
So please whoever got married already or has information about these question give me your feedback, I can't wait to hear your responses.
