What type of hairstyle are you thinking?Up, down, half up? That will sort of dictate the hair piece.
If you don't want a veil, there are plenty of options. Your wording, "hair thingy" is what really drew me in. ;) If I weren't doing a veil (I didn't think I was; my dress changed my mind!) then I would do a flower or a big clip.
It looks like the pattern on the dress has color to it? I think your hair up with a long simple veil would look great. I would try to make it long to floor, but VERY simple no stones, pattern lace etc. Just tulle maybe died to match one of the softer colors of dress.
PS you are never to old for a veil! lol Go for it if you want it.
PSS you don't look 50 at all.
i would definitely go for a beautiful pin and up do.
i would definitely look around etsy.com
Whoa you're 50? I would have guessed twenty years younger than that.
Pffft. Gorgeous dress, and never say you are "too old" for anything!!! If you like veils, wear one! I never would have guessed you to be 50 either, by the way! I hope I look that good at 50 (I'm only 11 years behind ya!)!!
Having said that, I am never good at determining what veil length and style and all when it comes to what goes best with a given dress. I am wearing a veil I found at the thrift store for $5 and dressed it up with a crystal comb, but I just lucked out because it has cording that matches the trim on my dress so I am wearing it for the ceremony then switching to something simpler for the dinner after so it won't be in my way.
I could see a flower fascinator on one side above your ear, maybe with a hint of the same color that is on your dress. Or a sparkly comb, maybe with a bit of tulle or net?
Here are pics of favorites I've saved, maybe you can get ideas:

50? really? I don't believe you
I would go with pretty hair pin, or a comb or something. I like the ones in the post above mine actuall :)
You guys are great! Thanks for the nice words about my "age". LOL.
These are all great suggestions. Like the idea of finding a way to pick up the lavender tones.
I'm with the crowd--can't believe you are 50. Since your wedding is somewhat informal, I am thinking half-up with some real flowers, probably coordinating with your bouquet. If you do decide on a veil, I agree with florencep--chapel length and plain.
Dang, you're gorgeous! I agree... you're not fifty. you must be messing with us. hehe
I think I'd go with flowers, or something delicate. Very pretty dress!
I think this would look good with that. This is on Etsy under seller Pegasusmaiden
Wow. I'm not close to 50 but I seriously hope I age that well. I woulda guessed like... 35. 40 MAYBE. That being said, if you want to rock a veil, go ahead! I agree with the PP, a really short birdcage or flower/feather hair piece would be lovely. I would avoid a long, ornate veil because it would take away from your beautiful dress.
@sarahberah: awwww...shucks. Thanks. I think the "soft focus" makes me look younger. LOL
OMG you do not look 50! I think you should wear whatever will make you happy.
Thanks ladies - looks like I'm going with the hair pin. You guys are great.
I spoke with my hair stylist who said to put my hair up and get a beautiful hair comb...but I never wear my hair that way. I think I'll leave it down, get it blown out in waves, and use hair pins/combs. In fact, here's the comb I'm thinking about. Sorry...It's a big image. LOL
PS: Might also work well to hold a single layer veii.
LOVE that comb, and I think it will look beautiful!
PS - I completely agree. You look AMAZING...I would have thought you were 30! Kudos! I hope I look that great when I'm 50!
@sonomagal: woowww - i love that haircomb! do you mind sharing where you got it from??? many thanks!!!
@beatrice: Sure - I got it from Etsy.

I agree with previous, a fascinator would look great! You look great for 50 OMG!
For all you wonderful people who say I don't look my age, that what's a fifty year old looks like when she's gotten a second shot at love. LOL
Hmmmm....a fascinator, huh? Got to think about that one. Not a bad idea. But aren't they kind of "forties" feeling (I mean 1940's)? Would that really work with the dress?
I think just a beautiful hair piece.. that can go with your hair up or down.

Sorry, there are no users yet.
I am an encore bride wearing the dress you see below. It has an amethyst lace overlay. Sorry to those of you who have seen the dress on previous posts and are a little tired of it.
It's an informal, but elegant Sunday afternoon wedding for about 60 people in a lovely restaurant/outdoor patio.
If not a veil (and I think I might be too old for a veil...I'm 50), what do you recommend I do with my hair? A flower? A pretty hair pin? Tiara?
Oh - I would rather wear my hair down or part up/part down.
