Since Nevember of last year I have gained about 20 pounds! I got layed off from work, moved four hours away from home (FH got a promotion!), quit smoking (yay me!!!) and still have no job (the job market in mich stinks!). I’ve been depressed and have no motivation to get anything done. I lounge around most of the day and because I’m not as active as I used to be, I try not to eat as poorly. I know I have some time before I get married to loose everything I want to, but I really want to start now and keep it off! It would just be nice to have my clothes fit again!
My issue is I have no motivation whatsoever! I know I have gained this weight and I know it is my fault and I know I’m the only person who can change it! I just cant seem to find that extra push to get me to stop watching reruns of say yes to the dress while sitting on the couch!
What helps you ladies get pumped to work out or go for a walk? What kind of music do you listen to that keeps you motivated while working out? What types of exercise do you prefer? Any other advice?
Please and Thank you!!!!

My motivation is to kick more ass.
I used to count calories / measure exercise by how much it was helping me lose weight / restrict how much I was eating and it was a total disaster. Obviously not all people are prone to having serious issues with that approach like I did, but it’s not fun or interesting.
Can you find a sport that you like to play? Sign up for a race? I play pickup ultimate frisbee which is pretty casual, but every step in speed helps me get open more often and play better defense. So now when I run, I’m trying to speed up that interval so I can catch the really fast girl who plays with us. I started doing Insanity which is super intense and I’ve noticed a palpable change in my agility.
If I’m running or lifting weights, I tend to listen to very uptempo music. I have a bunch of Hot Hot Heat songs, some cheesy pop like Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, Kesha, the most uptempo songs from my favorite classic rock artists. It can be anything as long as it’s a go-go-go pace.
Eating healthy just follows from that. After a hard workout, something nutritious just seems more appealing than a dessert. But if I have a dessert, it’s not a disaster or anything. It keeps it from being forbidden and blown out of propotion.
But seriously – the kick more ass motivation is fun and makes me push myself hard enough that I get a cardio high which then makes me want to push myself again so I get that rush again.

If I sit around an wait for motivation to kick in, it won’t happen. For me, I have to schedule it and/or plan it. Like going to work, or doing anything else in my day – it has to be a planned part, or it doesn’t happen.

Can you join a gym or attend classes? I felt the same way for YEARS until I discovered Spinning (stationary cycling) at my gym. It’s amazing..the first class I went to I barely made it through..had to stop mid-way. But now, I go 3-4 times a week and LOVE IT. I’ve lost weight and toned my glutes, legs, abs & arms! I went from NEVER going to the gym to ALWAYS going and not feeling like ‘myself’ unless I go. I strongly suggest you find a way you REALLY enjoy being active, and you’ll be looking forward to do it.
