My boyfriend and I bought a diamond, and it is currently on layaway to be paid off in 2014. I have been thinking about which setting I want, but I’m so indecisive so I decided to ask you bees for some advice! I was always set on just a six-prong solitaire with diamonds on the side for my engagement ring, but, for some odd reason, I always fall back looking at halos. I am not sure why, but I have been told that halos are just a trend and that the solitaire is timeless, and I get it, kind of, because.. is it really? I just love how halos look– especially a round in a cushion halo! But then I love the solitaire and how it sticks up high and is noticeable from a profile view.
Here is the solitaire setting:
The halo setting:
I know it’s easy to be biased on here– but if you have a halo and you like it then please say why you like the halo versus the solitaire and vise versa for if you have a solitaire and hate halos! I don’t know if this matters– but I am in my early twenties.
Thank you bees!

@paygeee: I vote halo. I personally don’t have a halo and sometimes regret it.

I had a solitaire for a month and it just didn’t do anything for me, I really tried to love it but I didn’t. So I got my halo & have never regretted it! I was like you and believed the whole “halos are just a trend” bs but the truth is, theyre not, they’re beautiful! I love my halo sooo much. I don’t think I will ever get tired of looking at it. When I was shopping for my ring I have now at one of the stores I only tried on halos & the sales girls engagement ring was a solitaire with pave down the side and she said she didnt really like it anymore and would go with a halo if she could do it over again. I say go with your gut!!

I don’t think anything that you personally like is a trend. I have wanted a rose gold engagement ring since I started looking at rings at age 13 and now that rose gold is a ‘trend’ and I will have my rose gold engagement ring soon it irritates me. I voted the solitare simply because I liked that setting more but I think you should get what you want, no matter if people are saying something is ‘trendy’ right now.

The halo setting looks awesome!!!

I voted for the halo and I have a halo. For me personally, I love six prong solitaires but in order for me to want to wear one, the diamond would have to be quite large (like 2ct or bigger). I know that sounds materialistic but it’s true. So I got a halo because not only do I love the extra sparkle, but it gives more finger coverage, which is what I want/like.

Thank you everyone who has responded so far! Anymore opinions out there?! I need them! It’s interesting to see how almost everyone who commented likes the halo setting– but the solitaire setting has more votes! I need people’s reasonings for why they like solitaire and not halo instead of just voting. 😛
Thanks bees– keep the opinions coming please!

I personally don’t like halo’s at all. The halo overshadows the beauty of the centre stone. I also like simple designs, so find the halo’s too intricate. I also don’t like the way the halo shown sits up really high.
You have plenty of time to choose a setting if you’re not getting it until next year. Why not get a mock-up of each setting and wear it around a while to see what you prefer more?
Definately trying them will give you a feel for what you prefer. I know that I always wanted a plain solitaire but it didn’t suit my fingers and ended up with a 3-stone with channel set side stones and it looks stunning!

I don’t have a halo – but I voted halo because I like finger coverage (my fingers are size 9… they need a lot of coverage!)
I don’t think you can go wrong either way! 🙂
