Ugh, this is gross and embarrasing, but I have to admit, that I have had back acne for a while and even though I have it in check and no longer break out much, I have some significant acne scars - dark marks on my upper back. I have 8 months to the wedding, when I'll be wearing a strapless gown. My fiance thinks the makeup artist can just cover it up, but I would really prefer to be proactive about it. I don't mind going to a spa and getting treatments, I am just curious about things any of you might have done to fade acne scars. Can you be frank and honest with me?

Go to a cosmetic dermatologist and see what they suggest.  Good luck!

There is something on the market called Mederma that is supposed to fade scars. I've never used it, but it might be a cheaper alternative than laser resurfacing. I'd also second going to the derm, not just for the scars, but to get on a plan to prevent the bacne to begin with. If you're washing with a body wash with salicylic acid and exfoliating two times a week, and still breaking out, then you probably need a good round of antibiotics and/or a prescription med like Duac.

Also, ask about Retin-A. I've had a prescription for Retin-A since I was about ten years old. It was first given to me to fade a really gnarly scar that covered one whole cheek on my face (from an accident as a kid on a gravel driveway) and the scars looked like burn scar tissue. The Retin-A completely faded it (after years of use) and also faded other scars, like chicken pox scars. But again, I used it for years and years and still do. I'm 32 now, and no one ever believes it. Everyone always thinks I'm in my early 20's. I totally attribute that to Retin-A.

I saw something in the GetMarried magazine. It's supposed to help with acne on the body. I can't think of what it's called right now & I don't have the magazine with me. It's only $11. I can check later & get back to you! I'm not sure if it helps with scars though.

I had problems with this as a teen and still get hormonal breakouts. One tip is to wash (scrub) your back last when you shower- after washing and conditioning hair. Use a acne wash, I use neutrogena's original acne face wash (ya know, the orange one?) with a back brush and clean my whole back, shoulders, neck, and chest. I'm prone to breakouts in those areas.

Also, when doing hair, don't let your hair products touch your bare skin. Use a towel, robe, or t-shirt to keep your back clean. Hope that helped!

Oh! And use ambi fade soap. Or a cocoa butter bar soap. Fading soaps can be found in African-American aisle in any drugstore or walmart. Palmer's sells a bar for all ethnicities that is for scarring.

I use a Neutrogena Body Scrub.....I think it's called body clear to prevent breakouts on my chest, etc. during the summer.  I really works.  Also, my MOH is a RN in a plastic surgery office.  I know they do not recommend Mederma, but the do have lasers and peels that can help with the scars.

I hate to say this, but tanning has really helped me clear up my skin in the past. I think it dries up some of the oil as well as evens out the tone of your skin.

I second the recommendations to basically treat your back like your face. Wash it with an acne face wash last thing in the shower, and put an acne treatment lotion on it. Keep hair products off it both in and out of the shower.

As far as fading scars, I know there are a lot of drugstore lotions and whatnot, but I think exfoliating is really the only thing that will make a difference. In 8 months, using a good scrub (meant for the face) three times a week could lighten your scars a bit. Anything more than that, you'll have to see a dermatologist for Retin-A or microdermabrasion.

I use Neutrogena body wash in pink grapefruit on my back and chest to keep the breakouts at bay.  Sometimes after I work out I rub my back with one of the cleansing towels too.  I have tried Mederma on other scars and it didn't do anything different than time does with fading scars.  If they really bother you, you should ask a dermatologist about treatments.

Oh and I really like Clinique Acne Solutions Body Treatment Spray.  It doesn't have benzoyl peroxide so you don't have to worry about it staining your clothes.

I have similar issues with acne and it definitely sucks!I went to the dermatologist a few weeks ago and for my body acne, he told me to buy a 10% strength PanOxyle bar. It's $5 at walgrens and it works wonderfully! Be sure and only use it in the shower, otherwise it will bleach your clothing. I don't know what your skin tone is like, but tanning (spray of course) works really well to hide scars. I've personally never had any luck with topical scar faders like Mederma, but tanning is a great temporary solution. Good luck!

I've been using Murad's post acne lightening gel on my face to help fade some acne scars.  It takes a while, but I have noticed that it helps fade the scars alot faster than they would on their own.

When it does break out, try soaking a cotton ball in  regular LISTERINE and wiping it on the acne (like toner) This was recommended to me by a nurse and works great in a pinch! I would also recommend merderma for the scars
