Hi, I was wondering if anyone had some advice for me.  I am looking for some helpful advice (either from a legal or experience perspective) on how I should conduct online dress shopping business.  For example, if someone is selling their dress preowned.  I have been browsing through this site for a few months now and have heard horror stories about how Bee's have been scammed some way or another out of a dress or money.  I have heard that paypal helps but I thought that only helps me because it does not give out my credit card number. I am really looking into preowned dresses but am really scared to lose out on money. Could anyone offer some advice on how to protect myself or ways to offer protection to whomever I am buying from?  I would really appreciate it.

    Thank you!

    Lauren

    Hi lauren:

I found my dress here in the classified section. I was scared to death because i had never bought a dress from somebody else and without even seen it in person. I pay using paypal. before i pay i asked her for pictures of the dress inside and out and she was nice to send me almost 15 pictures. also she keep contact with me using email. when she sent the dress she put a tracking number and sent it to me.

buying this dress is the best wedding decision i had ever made. The dress was better than i expected and it looks beautiful.

Hi! Welcome to the Bee. I bought my dress pre-owned from a Bee (she listed it on Once Wed as well) and had a very positive experience.

Perks of PayPal are NOT just that they don't give out your credit card number. They also protect you as a buyer and will go after a seller who misrepresented what they sold or didn't send the item as long as you report it to them within a certain amount of time after the purchase. Also, it's best to use your bank account via PayPal so you don't have to pay an exorbitant fee.

A few things that helped me with the dress buying process - I bought a dress that was a) a brand I was familiar with so I knew the quality and b) from a bride who was a similar size and shape, and who listed the measurements and many pictures of the real dress, not a model.

    Hope that helps!

Wow that was fast thank you, both of you!

@Magenta- I am glad you had such a great experience!

@lilyfaith- Thank you for the paypal advice.  I am not too familiar with it so that does help.  Also can you put a clause on it that says that if I am not satisfied I can return it for my money within a certain amount of time or is that something separate that I would have to work out with the seller?

    Thanks again, Lauren

No problem. I use PayPal a freakish amount - I even bought my horse that way. :) You'd have to work out the return policy with the seller. Usually those who are willing to work with you give you 7-14 days to make up your mind, and you have to pay return shipping. Not all sellers are willing to add that clause, though.

I bought my dress, preowned & preworn, from preownedweddingdresses.com...

    BEST DECISION EVER!

I never could have afforded the dress I am going to wear!

    Tips:

Make sure you know your measurements. Go to a bridal salon and they will measure you... just be sure to remember them. If you decide to have a friend measure you, MAKE SURE you do it right... I work for a tailor, and I know how tricky ths can be.

If the dress is preworn, make sure they list any damage. It is absolutely unreasonable to think that the dress would be in absolute mint condition after it's been worn... even if its been cleaned, chances are, there is something to be disclosed.

If they don't draw up a contract, do it yourself.

I am a three dress bride, and I just sold one of my other dresses. I had a contract and used paypal. As a seller, I can tell you I took pictures of every single tiny detail!

    Hope that helps!
