I am just all over the ring boards tonight, it seems!
When Fiance and I were discussing upgrading my stone earlier tonight, he said, “We still need to get my ring too, you know.” Of course I knew that, and I would never ask him for a new stone for my ring if it meant he wouldn’t be able to get his ring, but that’s not the case — we can definitely afford both.
So I decided to purchase his ring out of my personal bank account (we have combined finances but I have a decent chunk of change in my personal account still) and surprise him with it. I know he’s felt a little neglected through this wedding planning process because everything seems to be about the bride, so I know he’d totally love it if I surprised him with this — it’ll let him know I’m still thinking about him through all this bride-centric wedding stuff 🙂
He has picked the ring out and I know what size he is, but I’m having trouble choosing an engraving. The site we’re buying it from includes free engraving so I definitely want to take advantage of that rather than wait and pay for engraving later.
I have 30 characters. The things I’ve come up with are:
JMP & KLP 6-30-12 (our married initials and wedding date)
How wonderful life is 6-30-12 (a line from our first dance song, and wedding date)
I think the first one is kind of plain, but then again it’s simple and classic. I like the second one better, but it flows oddly to me. Since “How wonderful life is” and “6-30-12” are two separate thoughts, I feel like there needs to be a divide between the two, like a ~ or a •. But the thing is, I only have room for one more character (spaces count) so I don’t have room for something like that because with the extra space that’s 2 more characters.
So which one would you choose? Do you think the second one flows oddly, or do you think it works? Would you suggest something entirely different? Help!

Is the song “Your Song?” If so you could do:
JMP & KLP Your Song 6-30-12
Your Song JMP & KLP 6-30-12
6-30-12 JMP & KLP Your Song
I personally don’t think the engraving has to “flow”. It is on the inside of the ring and it is something personal between the two of you, rather than a statement to the rest of the world. I would find something that has meaning, regardless of how it sounds.

I agree with @takemyhand: the engraving is something personal between the two of you, so I don’t think it has to flow. Your (future) Husband will understand the meaning and probably won’t even notice that it doesn’t flow. Maybe I’m a little biased because I really want to have FI’s ring engraved with “you had me from hello” which is our first dance song, but I definitely like the option of “how wonderful life is 6-30-12”

@takemyhand: It is indeed “Your Song”! That is a good point about not necessarily having to have it flow. Hmmmm….

I like the simplicity of the first one with just your initials. If those lyrics will still be important to you in 50 years, then by all means go with that. I’ve found that over time we’ve had different “our song”s and there’s no single set of lyrics that are super important to us, so that’s probably influencing my opinion!

@Kant: I KNEW I recognized it! Love that song, by the way! I am glad you see that it doesn’t have to flow. My Fiance proposed to me with the song “Love Like Crazy” so we talked about engraving that in our bands. It will likely be something really weird like “Love Like Crazy 7-27-12 JJ MW” but if it is inside the ring, then it means something to US rather than the world. The world can share the choice he made when he picked out my e-ring. The world has no business knowing our secret inside the ring 🙂

I really like the classic/traditional first one. Though, is your maiden name start with P? Because (if it’s not) I always assumed it was your maiden initials 🙂

LOL well I just asked Fiance what he would want engraved in his wedding band (he didn’t catch on at all that I’m planning to buy it) and he said either just our wedding date, or possibly the date and “All my love” which is one of his favorite Led Zeppelin songs. So now I’m completely thrown for a loop haha. Maybe I should just spill the beans and let him pick…damn, I so wanted to surprise him 🙁

@love108: Heh nope my maiden initials are KLM (my parents did the alphabetical thing on purpose), his last name is P so my married initials will be KLP.
