As the wedding is drawing near and funds are running low, I am trying to come up with another food option that isn’t as expensive as buying catered chicken. Our wedding/picnic is in the park and is a casual event. Keep in mind that average temps have been in the upper 90’s here so it will probably be hot and we are having a 5:30 ceremony.
Our menu so far:
4 different types of cakes
I was thinking of maybe adding a fruit salad, or possibly making up my own meat and cheese trays instead of the chicken? (I’m afraid with 2 hot food options people aren’t going to want to eat them cuz it’s so dang hot!)
Editing to add: This event will only last 2 hours then some of our guests will be joining us at a different venue for the alcohol/dancing part of the night which is a local concert to benefit a child with cancer. There will be less than 30 attending the actual picnic/wedding with it being mostly immediate family/kids.

I think fruit is a great option!

I really like the fruit idea, and also the meat and cheese tray. I wouldn’t want to eat a bunch of hot food if it was a million degrees outside.
What about adding some kind of punch? People may want to drink something besides alcohol, which doesn’t mix well with the heat.
EDIT: Or, instead of the multiple cakes, which can sort of melt in the heat, what about an ice cream bar?
EDIT: gazpacho? This site has some neat ideas: http://www.yumsugar.com/10-Warm-Weather-Foods-3420173?slide=0

No way to keep ice cream cold. 🙁 Some of the cakes are going to be icingless like pineapple upside down cake, and blueberry cake.
We aren’t having alcohol. For drinks we are having water, iced tea and lemonaide.

I would still offer a meat option. There is no reason though that you can’t do a cold meat choice for an evening wedding in August.
Will you have time to do some baked chicken yourselves or get someone else to do it? It will much less costly than purchasing rotisserie chickens.

Not sure if I would have time. I will be cooking the rigitoni and making the pasta salad. Fiance is helping though so maybe.
