Ok Bees. I love my ring. I do, I do. I love the stone (DH and I picked it out together, it was the first one we saw, we both loved it)…. and I know I’m just being picky, but I hate my prongs.
I knew I wanted a simple, solitaire setting (DH picked out the YG). So, I’ll first say, I like my setting, but there are many others that I would’ve been happy with, too.
My problem is with the prongs (the head). The jewelers delayed my ring because they couldn’t get the stone to fit in the prongs correctly and had to add the extra bar of gold (don’t know what you call it) on all four sides. I was annoyed, but was more annoyed with the delay so I didn’t have them fix it then.
I hate the prongs and that bar. A lot of my stone’s weight is in its depth. I feel like you can’t see it with those bars there; the yellow gold on the bar reflects in the stone, sometimes making it look more yellow, and I hate the way the prongs curve and kind of “hug” the stone. I feel like a square cut stone should have straight prongs.
I want the prongs switched out. I want the bar gone and straight prongs. Bees with square stones: show me your prongs, baby! I need some prongspiration.
Here’s my ring:

FWIW, I think your ring is beautiful. The extra “bars” there are called a basket, and many setting have them, but many do not. While my ring is not as elaborate as yours, it is a cathedral setting with a four prong setting and no basket. Sorry the photo is shadowed, but I don’t have another clear picture of the side view. The full stone is visible, and the shoulders of the cathedral come up close enough that they are not visible from the top. Is your stone round? Cushion? It is hard to tell in the pictures you posted.

I actually love your setting, but I love claw prongs. I have nothing much else to add other than I think it’s beautiful lol. Good luck!

@echomomm: It’s a square radiant. Faces up like a princess.
Edited: Also, see how your shoulders come up and nearly (or appear to) touch your prongs? Mine are a little weird. Like the stone is too tall for the shoulders.
I mean, if the jewelers thought the stone wouldn’t fit right into that head, they should’ve told me and I could have picked out another setting. The told me they had to add the basket because the stone wasn’t secure.

@btothez: Agreed, they should have said something if the setting wasn’t appropriate for your shape or size stone! I have a cathedral and I guess a “modified” basket? It’s not a line but it’s a heart detal on each side of the head. I hope I’m describing this right …

@btothez: Just wanted to say your ring is gorgeous! I hope you get the prongs/head the way you want them, though.

@btothez: I don’t have a pic available but my old e-ring (that I lost) was a princess solitaire with a V-prong head. I think that is what you want based on what you’re describing.
Google “V-prong head” and that might give you some ideas.

Oh I love your setting, especially the prongs.

MIne is a three stone, but the stones are princess cut. I think my basekt/prongs are like yours, but I like it. Also, I think your ring is super beautiful.

I think your ring is gorgeous as is – and nobody is ever looking at your ring enough to think “Hmm if only I could see the side better, i’d know how big it really is”.

I would find some photos of settings you do like, and then take them to a jeweler to re-set the ring.
I just played around on Blue Nile, and I noticed that nearly all the settings for radiant stones have that little bar thingy. It might be difficult to find some photos, but keep looking!

My prongs were an issue in my setting too – the inspiration setting was round, and my stone is a cushion. The folks who had the original setting said, “Oh we’ll just laser out that head and put a new one in.” The folks who actually made my setting said, “No, we’ll need to build it from the ground up because we won’t design or sell a piece with a structural flaw.” I liked the second answer much better, so we went with them.
The original design had a bar across the prongs – the basket – like yours – but my Fiance wanted to be able to see the whole stone, so we asked to make sure that was an option, and they said SURE THING! And sure enough, my stone is very secure, and no bar across the front and back of the basket (there IS a bar on the sides where the cathedral connects, like yours).
But all that said – this was a custom design all the way. Perhaps they need to re-make your ring so that they can make the basket correct to secure your stone without the side bars.
Here’s the side view:
And from the top I really love it because the prongs are really minimal:

@kidseahawk: Love that setting! I saw your CADs of it I think. So pretty!

@btothez: It seems very inappropriate for the jeweler to add a basket without asking you. They need to make it right on their dime!

@btothez: I love your stone, but I agree. The head doesn’t do it justice. I had a deep princess and I had it set 3 times before I was happy. I wanted to see my diamond all the way around, and the bottom! It made it look so much bigger by raising it with thin prongs.
