We are arranging our own rentals for our beach wedding in August. Buffet, open bar, 100 people. Caterer has suggested a huge number of glasses, plates, etc. What is the rule of thumb/ formula for ordering your tableware with the rental company?

For a seated dinner, you’ll only want to order a dozen extra plates just in case you get some uninvited guests or someone breaks a plate or something. If you’re ordering glasses for the bar, and it’s open bar, then you might need 400 or more depending on what kind of drinkers your guests are. If they have a dishwasher available, that helps too!
Those are just my rough guesses. I’m not sure if there’s a rule of thumb. Maybe someone else can offer some more expert advice than me?

I went to a wedding where they didn’t rent enough plates and they ran out before the cake!
Not good! So if there estimate seems high it is probably a good thing!
