That’s so crazy! My parents didn’t really have any ring issues. In our culture, the man sends a representative on his behalf to ask the woman’s father for permission. So, my uncle and grandfather met with my mom’s dad and at the end of the talk (or as my parents like to say, “after trading chickens and cows”), they were engaged. No ring, no proposal, nothing. My mom still jokes about how she was never proposed to. A few weeks before the wedding, my dad just handed her the box and was like, “Oh yea, you’ll probably need this.”

At least it all worked out. It always interests me the way courtship and weddings were done back then.
