I'm living in D.C., but we're having our wedding in central KY at the end of this month! If anyone needs any help with vendors, etc., don't hesitate to message me!
I hope you share some pictures ! Are you going for a rustic look? I think those weddings are so simple and beautiful !
With a long engagement there are too many options and way too much time to second guess! I hope to sign my photographer contract this week and then forget about it for a couple months--like that will happen!
Well, luckyinKY, I know what you mean, but just try and make those decisions and then let them lie. There are too many other details to worry about in the end!
I'd be glad to share photographs once the wedding is done. We're definitely going for rustic, romantic elegance. We're getting married in front of an old barn. But as my grandfather restores antiques, we're hanging an old wrought iron chandelier in between the barn doors and then we're hanging curtains between the doors as well that will sweep onto the ground. We'll hang grapevine from the fencing that surrounds the barn and fencing area and use antique gas lanterns hung from shepherd's crooks around the ceremony area as well. It will be a tented reception, but our florist is also using antiques there as well--all of my family's old copper kettles, buckets, etc. to fill with flowers, ice down the wine. Lots of hydrangea, Monet roses, etc. I think it will be fun and I'm excited to celebrate my family's heritage and history in the wedding!
Anyone else looking for a KY photographer, who doesn't have one already, we've been really happy with Amanda Egan so far. I know how hard it is to find someone local who's reasonably priced. I'll post reviews after the wedding, but she did a free engagement session for us since we booked her for the wedding and I thought the results were great (we're Cat and Gary):
Lotusmoss, thank you for the local photographer suggestion. I am trying to help my sister find a photographer for her upcoming wedding at the end of September. I got married in Lexington two years ago and my biggest disappointment was my photographer. The pictures in my album are beautiful but he hasn’t been very easy to work with as far as ordering additional pictures.
It sounds like your wedding is going to be absolutely charming. I hope you will share some of your pictures, as I would love to see an outdoor wedding in Mt. Sterling. Although we moved from Mt. Sterling when I was 8, some of my mom’s family still lives there.
cfwinston--What a small world! So nice to hear that someone knows where Mt. Sterling even is located on the map I'll definitely post some pics come June.
The great thing about Amanda is that she was willing to negotiate our package to give us the digitals on a CD instead of a wedding album. As my FI and I both have some photo editing experience, and since we wanted to be able to do affordable reprints for lots of our family members, this was the perfect solution. It's definitely worth finding a photographer who will do this or negotiating with your photographer to get a digital CD or DVD. We didn't have this option for our engagement session photos and they were $12 for a 4x6 (!!!), as opposed to 20 cents or so on Snapfish, or any other online printing service. We'll make Blurb photobooks for our parents after the wedding with the digitals.
cfwinston- Emily Simon of Emily Simon Photography is another local option. Emily was an art major in college and although she's just getting settled in the photography business, she's produced some wonderful shots from the various shoots she's done with families and her brother's wedding. Although she wasn't the primary photographer for the wedding, she did do a lot of nice enhancements on some of the images that came back. Emily's website is www.emilysimonphotos.com, and although it's still under construction right now, there's contact information available to get in touch with her about more information. She has most of her images up on her photography myspace page until the site is completed, which you can find at www.myspace.com/emilysimonphotography. You could call me a little biased though since she is my best friend :) Happy photographer hunting!
Lotusmoss: Our details are still a little vague! We are getting married next fall, outside at one of the historical locations in Louisville. We are trying to keep things simple-which is more difficult to pull off than one might think :).
Hi Lucky! The wedding planning is going great - our date isn't until June, 6, 2009 - so a little over a year away. So far I've made the big deicsions. We're getting married at Duncan Memorial Chapel and are having the reception at Woodhaven Country Club, they do in-house catering, so that's one last thing I have to worry about. I have my photographer, dress, setup and tear down and all the decorating, and my stepmom is meeting with the cake person this week for me (same woman who created my sisters cake a year ago.) We have a very small budget (around 6K) so planning has been tough, we've made a lot of compromises but I'm definitely glad I've had time to find the good deals. I'm in the same boat as you, I keep second guessing every little thing...I'll have to get over that.
LotusMoss, your wedding sounds like it is going to be absolutely gorgeous!
hey luckyinky--awesome link. Wish I would've known about this earlier! We're using a lot of vendors that we know, but since KY is kind of a smaller crowd, I found it hard to find vendors with reviews/experience, or that we felt we could trust. As for keeping it simple--I'm with you! Ours hasn't turned out that way really, but one of the things I've loved is picking vendors that I trust and then letting them make the decisions (i.e., I don't really know what flowers we'll have, but I'm sure they're going to be beautiful). So many people focus on the details and then forget about the important stuff--like the ceremony, and just having fun with friends and family.
msbutton--the Duncan Memorial is beautiful--love the slate floors! I can't believe you have so much done and the wedding is still a year away!
Glad you like the site. I actually put it together and hope people continue to write reviews. The biggest challenge so far has been finding vendors with reviews, so I feel comforted in my decisions! I am in Chicago and can't meet with every vendor and even when you do I feel they are going to show you their best which may or may not be the quality or professionalism they show on the wedding day (I'm paranoid hehe!).
I'm trying to keep it simple but it probably won't come off that way :) We have bought chandeliers for the trees around the ceremony site. We are trying to avoid a tent altogether and have stringed lights hung over the reception area with white lanterns (evening wedding). We have gold tree centerpieces for the tables. Since it is the fall we are probably going to decorate with pumpkins/gourds and other fall foliage. But we are trying to do as much ourselves as possible with the help of family. Most of our details are here .
Msbutton: Agree duncan memorial is lovely! My mom wanted me to choose this site. Had I done the church wedding I probably would have went this way. Are you an oldham county bride?
LotusMoss: Thanks! Yeah, I'm a little ahead of myself sometimes, I think. I'm kind of a control freak, can you tell? ;)
Lucky: No, I've pretty much lived in every area in Louisville, I was born and lived in Valley Station until I was 9 - then we moved to Middletown - then my mom moved to Jeffersontown and then I moved to Cincinnatti for school and then transferred schools and moved to Columbia, MO to attend an all girls university. I've lived just about everywhere but oldham county! What part of KY are you from?
So obviously there aren't a ton of us, but I thought I'd start things off with a "hi"...

Very exciting lotusmoss! Where in central Ky?
hwong,How are you liking the long engagement? I am ready for it to just be over ! :) !

I'm getting married in little ole Mt. Sterling--my hometown growing up--on my grandparents' farm. But all of our vendors are from the Lexington area.
Hope the long engagements mean that your all's planning is relaxed and easy!
