Oooh! I love persuasive writing 🙂 I teach special Ed algebra, but used to do special ed ELA. How about: reasons to give or not give homework, reasons to adopt school uniforms or not, reasons to change a school calendar (maybe 4 days a week but no summers off, or longer school days but more time off?), or reasons to keep or get rid of state testing. I know most students would prob feel one way about certain topics but you could use graphic organizers to list reasons for pros and cons of each topic, them have them argue in both directions. That’s what I had to do for one of my certification tests 🙂

Love the topics PP gave! Also: should kids have cell phones?  should kids have bedtimes? I have a bunch more that require minimal research (like, you give them copies of two articles, maybe watch a video, maybe look at a graph).  I do a huuuuge unit on this in Dec/Jan so let me know if you need graphic organizers/charts or resources!!!

I love pp suggestions.

Should junk food or soda be sold in school to kids? I second the dress code/uniform debate as well

Should kids be allowed to access social media in schools? That one always goes down well! If you pick a topic they are likely to have an opinion on, you could just show them some examples of opinion articles from newspapers and look at the language features.
