Hey philly peeps! My boyfriend and I have been engaged for about a week now, but we’re both teachers and are trying to get as much done as possible for the school year begins.
Our dilemma is this: we both would like to have a big wedding–or rather, it’s not the size that matters, but we both have lots of really great friends that we want to include in the celebration (the majority of these we could just not imagine celebrating without). And I also come from a tight-knit big family that also has a really special (and sizable) community of family-friends. We always imagined that our wedding would be the perfect place to bring everyone together and have a total blast.
We are also two pretty low-key people who could totally be excited to have a casual wedding with lots of DIY elements in a lovely outdoor spot (we have lots of musician/artist friends who’d be happy to help out). We don’t need all the bells and whistles! Just want to make it a special day with the people we love (of which there are many!).
Is it possible to have both a low-key and a big wedding that won’t break the bank? Does anyone know of a nice outdoor venue that could accommodate a large reception but also stay affordable and low-key? In my research so far, it’s seeming like big wedding often means formal wedding.
any advice would be appreciated!!

When you say big – are you estimating 100? 200? 300+? I think knowing a bit more about your numbers would help to offer suggestions…

@eupenmalmody: good point. It’s looking like we can get it to around 250.

I found this place online a while back when I was looking for venues for someone else! I am not sure if it will do 250, but it said somewhere 225. So it really might work for you. The yellow barn has quite a lot of space! I hope you like it, I think it looks like it would be fun!
Feel free to PM me.

I also responded to your post on the other board, but what about the Old Mill?

@JennM21: the old mill is right up near the top of our list of places! My fiance and I actually met for the first time just five minutes up the path through the woods at the elementary school next to it! Only thing is there’s not a great option for rain, and you have to use their catering. Have you heard anything about them? I think they’re called Connor…

It was on our list too, but there weren’t many hotel options. I did speak to the owner, and they are willing to work with any budget. Place looks fantastic tho! I thought they had an inside ballroom? I might be mistaken tho…
