I just found out my Dad wanted to name me tangerine!!!!
After this song by led zeppelin:

Do any of you know what you almost got named?
I was almost named Portia. It's my mother's favorite girl's name. If not that I was actually going to be named Evan, which I would have loved. Unfortunately my parents couldn't agree, so my father's name won out in the end. I still think my mother should have rallied harder for Evan.
@Mrs.Estep:Clydemnestra. They only changed their minds when they realized I might get called Clit for short. No. I. Am. Not. Joking.
@Mrs.Estep: I tried to reply to this a few minutes ago, but it ate my post. :( Mostly I had said that I actually laughed out loud at that one..."Tangerine". Love it... Don't get me wrong.... It is a great song and all...but yeah. Lol
Echo (which no offense to anyone, I am so glad did not end up being my name, it really does not suit me) was my moms first choice, and Sky was her next, I'm not sure what changed their mind, but those two names seem like they would have opened me up for a lot of ridicule as a child. Instead I have another name that is more normal, but wasn't popular at the time, I am satisfied with their choice, although to be honest as I child I wanted a different name, I guess its just hard for parents to please everyone
@Mrs.Estep: When I read the title (other that laughing) I pictured Friends episode when Rachel and Ross are discussing baby names and Rachel says Rain: "Hi I'm Rain, I live under a bridge and my skirt is made out of wheat"
I must say I know a girl named rain (but in spanish) and she's not weird at all. I also know a girl names Cesaria (You know... C-section in spanish?), that must be considered child cruelty.
As far as I know, my name was the only one in the running. I mean, by the third girl my mom had already used up her other ideas. :P I like my name though (although not all the variations of it).
My mom really wanted to name me Angela, then her brother named his daughter that. Then she wanted Aubrey or Amy, and my dad vetoed. So now I'm Rebecca. I like all those names but I also like my name, so I would be fine whatever they had decided :)
If I were a boy I would've been Anthony. I don't love the name but I would've been pretty safe from ridicule :P
@galloway111: That's the reason why I'm keeping my future children's name a secret from everyone other than FI (yes I've picked tha names already). I've heard all kinds of stories from moms who tell their planned names and someone else "steals" them.
My parents wanted to name me Lanie, which is a cool name, but when paired with my last name, made me sound like a stripper!!
So they went with Lauren instead. I'm greatful :)
@Coffee cup: Well, her brother is 10 years older than her, so she was only a teenager then and she hadn't actually ever told them. It was completely coincidence, sadly. I have no siblings and I have so many cousins that if I avoided all their names and their kids' names I'd be left with very few options, lol. But yeah, I hate when people completely steal a name on purpose :(
My mom wanted to name me Tabatha (yes no I) But my grandma Vetoed that idea because I might be called Tabby cat. So instead my mom named me after my uncles stripper ex girlfriend... I think my mom might be the only person to be crazy enough to name her kid after a stripper lol...
well, I'm named after a character on a show my dad saw late at night. Knowing his penchant for falling asleep to Jerry Springer, I was relieved to learn in my late teens that it was a legit nice show. I think what they named me was all they considered for a girl.
I would have been Tyler had I been a boy.
i almost got bobbie lee.... after my dad... it woulda been okay.... but i like my name :)
Well I was born on my grandma's birthday (3 weeks late!) and throughout the pregnancy she had told my mom if I was born on her birthday that she got to name me. My mom said okay because who would think a child would be 3 weeks late... but my grandma wanted to name me Kathleen Jean. Um.. no. Sorry, don't like it. My mom nixed that.
The only other name that was in the running was Casey, and my parents would call me CC because my maiden name started with a C. But then my mom worried that with my last name (which has a similar sound to Carraba), a name like Casey Carraba would sound too "cutesy" and "doom me to being a cheerleader" <-- her words (my mom is hilarious).
I almost got named Mary. Would have really liked it, but I love my name more. It was my dad's idea, my mom thought it was too common and dull (my name is still common, but more "romantic" and "special"). He let her have her way, as he always does :)
Almost a Leah to match the first letter of my sister's name. Ended up with something different but equally classic.
I was almost an Aspen (which I wouldn't have minded) or an Emily (which I would have minded a LOT)....but who knows if I would have minded/not minded since it would have changed my whole life's trajectory!
My father wanted to name me "Vincencheta" after a Vincent Black Shadow motorcycle. Thank God my mother was a sane woman. He only has grand daughters and keeps hinting that if we ever have a boy that the name "Vincent" would be a great choice.... haha.
@KatyElle: No lie - I went to school with a girl named Autumn. Her older sister was Maple and her brother was Forrest.
These are all so interesting to hear! Esp. since someone almost got named my real name. lol
I was named after my grandmother. Both first & middle name.
My dad wanted to name me Santana.....yeahhh which is strange because he is not even a huge santana fan but grew up in the 70's.
My dad wanted Farrah and my Mom wanted Rachel; they compromised on Sarah. If I had been a boy, I would have been Matthew.
Some of these "almost" names are making me super curious on what your real first names are!
@hisgoosiegirl: For real? I know a couple who named their girls America and Ireland.
My parents never really had a chance to discuss names, as they didn't find out they were expecting me until 5 months into the pregnancy, and I arrived a month later. That being said, my Dad has told me he would have rallied for 'Christine'.
My middle name almost was Elizabeth, but a family friend had a baby girl a week before I was born and named their daughter My First Name Elizabeth.
Well, my mom didn't want them to think they were copycats (love my mom), but was dead set on my first name, so now my middle name is Lauren, which I actually like better because it's a more unique middle name.
My parents had decided to name me Charles since they were told I was going to be a boy. When I was born they were unsure of what name to go with. The first few hours of my life they tested the name Stephanie. My father left the hospital to go get my name tatooed on his body. (I'm not sure sometimes how this man is now the man I know lol) While he was driving to the shop the song "Sweet Melissa" by the Allman Brothers came on the radio. When he got to the shop he had Melissa tatooed on his right arm, giving my mother no choice, although she said it didn't make her mad because she liked it far better than Stephanie. I would kill DH!
Hmm, well I didn't have any almosts. I would have been Max were I born a boy. My sister was almost Meredith, but I think my dad takes the cake- he was almost Trout.
Laura Jane (from my mother's side of the family) and if I was a boy, Alexander. I like my name much more ;)
My dad wanted Roxanne. He wanted to call me "Roxy".
Instead I ended up with a French Canadian name also owned by my mother, my grandmother, and great-grandmother. It has a unique nickname that I use 99% of the time... but Roxy would have been cool.
Mom wanted Chloe for a girl, which would have suited me just as well as my real name. If I was a boy, I would have been Andrew, or Drew for short, which I think would have been alright. Can't really picture my boy self, haha, but I guess I could have been a Drew!
I was very nearly Emily Lauren, but my initials would have spelled "elf" so my parents decided on something totally different! They also had wanted to choose names that would be sort of classic but not "the name" of that time, but decided in the end they cared more about the names and less about the trends. Let's just say the name they wound up with was a LOT less popular in my generation than Emily was!
