First off, the Chicken Dance is plenty hip, thank you very much! (I'm from Wisconsin and a little touchy on the subject. More on that later....)
But I'm afraid you might be a bit out of luck in the "hip" polka department. Then again, any really cheesy song can be fun if your friends are good enough sports to join in. The key is to find something so catchy that everyone would want to join....
Last night, as I was drifting off to sleep, I suddenly sat up and cried, "THE BEER BARREL POLKA!" But a quick search of iTunes doesn't turn up any particularly rolicking versions of that old favorite.
Instead, the best option I found on iTunes was "Too Fat", by The Polka Dots. If you don't mind the less-than-enlightened lyrics, that is. ("I don't want her, you can have her, she's too fat for me...." And yet oddly, one of the catchiest tunes imagineable.)
Good luck!
You could go a little retro with the Andrew Sisters: Roll out the Barrel. Great, now I'm going to have that stuck in my head... When in doubt, there's always Strauss. Or maybe you can try emailing the bloggers from www.LetsPolka.com. They might have some ideas.
I'm part Polish and we've played many a Polka at family weddings. To be honest, you don't need to find a "hip" Polka...people will love it! I'm telling you, it's one of those songs that really gets people out of their seats and dancing around, even if they aren't Polish! Play it later in the night when everyone is really into the dancing...it will be a hit!

Help! My mom is insisting that we play a polka song during our recpetion. She says that our Long Island guests will be disappointed if we don't play one polka song. But polka is so old fashioned and not at all what we had in mind. Does anybody know of any "hip" polka songs, or maybe a mashup song that has several styles of ballroom dancing (including polka) incorporated into it? Something that won't bore our younger guests?
