You can try http://www.iweddingband.com for some simple options, and the Robbins Bros website has quite a few men's rings available to view. And what you're saying about your platinum ring will happen to any platinum ring--the patina is part of what distinguishes white gold rings from platinum ones.
As far as what metal is best for men's bands, titanium is really popular right now, but I'm not sure it's any "better" than any other metal... I think it just depends on the look that he is going for. Mr. Spaniel got tri-color gold just because he liked it. :)
Another bee was looking for a ring with a brushed finish in the center.

Spaniel is right about the dull finish...that's the look any platinum ring will start to develop after some wear. I'm pretty sure a jeweler can polish it back to the way it originally was, though!
To answer your other question--I actually think that platinum will hold up better, especially since it normally starts to get that brushed/satin look after a while. White gold will start to take on a yellow tint and will have to be re-plated if you want to restore the white color.
Anyway, I really like the way those rings with the brushed centers look. They're simple, not toooo plain, and definitely have character! :)
My husband really wanted something durable that would hold its finish. So we went with Tungsten Carbide. It is incredible - we have been married exactly one year and his ring looks flawless - brand new!
His also features a brushed finish in the middle and a shiny finish on the outer edges. We got it at www.titaniumkay.com - incredible service, incredible prices and they engraved it for me. I'll try to post a pic of it....
We've had some trouble finding something we like for FI's ring. We are considering ordering one from an Etsy seller. So far, we like these:

We're getting palladium bands from Wedding Ring Hotline. We used them once before and had a really good experience.
Thanks - I now have lots of great links to forward to my man for him to investigate!
I bought a band from the TeNo store in Soho and he loves it. It's stainless steel and ceramic inlaid band.

My FI and I have started looking around at men's wedding bands, but can't seem to find one that he really likes. Can anyone share a good site with lots of options to browse through? We've scoured Blue Nile already, and nothing there jumps out at him. (He's very particular and says he wants something simple and comfortable, although he has no idea of exactly what he's looking for!)
Also, does anyone have advice on which type of metal is best for a man's band? My engagement ring is set in platinum, and after just a few months you can already see how the finish on the platinum has dulled from shiny to very flat. (Don't get me wrong, I still ADORE it, just noticed the change!) One of the first styles my FI gravitated towards was a platinum ring with a brushed finish in the middle and a shiny finish on the sides. Can anyone weigh in on how a finish like that would hold up over time? I'm thinking that it might hold up better in white gold than platinum. Any advice would be appreciated!
