I think you may end up having to go the scrapbooking route, but I think in the grand scheme of DIY projects, it will be an “easy” one.  You could also ask on etsy, but honestly I think it would be quick enough for you to put together that it might not be worth it…

I was searching for a good modern guest book too, and I think I’m going to borrow your idea!  That book is awesome!  My first idea would be to look around for some hardcover jounals made of black “gel pen paper” and go from there.  The gel pen craze wasn’t that long ago, so I’m sure those journals still exist somewhere.  I’m going to go on the hunt and let you know if I find anything!

I found this website that does professional-looking binding (not the scrapbook style binding) – and their prices don’t seem that bad!  I called to see if I could ask about a custom book with black pages, but it appears their office is only open during the week.  I’m going to try them again on Monday.

I did a photo guestbook from shutterfly, and it actually turned out really good.  I was worried about the glossy pages, too, but it wasn’t a problem at all.  We had black pages and used silver and gold markers.  I initially worried that the pens needed to be fine tipped (as opposed to thicker marker tip) but we ended up with sharpees and they were perfect!  People just wrote bigger.  There are a couple of smudges but they don’t bother me at all and I LOVE the book, we do look at it all the time.  I say definitely go for a photo guest book, in any form. 🙂

Kolo albums are pretty modern-looking, and I’m pretty sure you can get one with black pages.

we used a kolo album with black pages – it turned out great!  we did a polaroid guest book and just had guests (with some help from my brothers) take pictures of each other and we also provided some fun props (the hot pink feather boa was a hit!)  you can buy the album from various places but the cheapest place we found was at aaron brothers, since they usually have coupons for 40 or 50% off floating around.  we also bought metallic pens from michaels.
